ICR and Win95: Can it be done?

by Deuc » Sat, 06 May 1995 04:00:00

I have a 486 DX/33 with 4 megs of RAM.  Now, I know this isn't the ideal
setup to be running Win95 on, but I'm planning on upgrading anyways.

But, what may keep me from upgrading is the performance of ICR with Win95.
Has anyone out there tried this, or would have a suggestion as to what I
should expect?

Thanks

I'm running ICR and NASCAR on a 486DX33 with 8mb ram under Win95 build
456. Everything runs fine. What it does is dumps you into "MS-DOS mode",
i.e. only the game is running. Windows itself is not really running. It
restarts after you exit...

Build 456?! Ouch. The Win'96 preview's only on 347! Anyway, I was
testing Win'96 today with Nascar. Ran very well indeed, even in SVGA
mode. It was also very nice about switching to a DOS box, until I
swapped back and it corrupted the static area at the top of the
picture.

I've seen it run on a 486 DX2/66 -8megs off SCSI CDROM.
It plays better through Win95 than before. No setup problems, no boot
disks. Indycar -no problem better than before.

Go for it!

You must be one of the official beta-testers.  I didn't know Win95 had
been released yet.  How does it run on your DX33?  I have a 486DX2-50
with 8mb RAM.  I'm very anxious to see it.

It runs fine on my beta version.

I have a 4meg ram, 486SX/33 (again not ideal!!!!!).
I have setup a pif for ICR (right click, properties), and somewhere in the
pif editor thingy you can specify config & autoexec files. OK the machine
then has to reboot when you run it, but it runs just as good as a native
DOS machine - plus it automatically re-boots to W'95 after.

Not a pretty solution, but hey! it works!!! (If any one has a better idea
please mail me!)

Build 347 was the last stable build out.  Forget about grabbing any of those
since then, unless you are testing.  (Duh-uh)  Expect crashes with builds 457+

I've run various builds upto and including 456 and the only problem I've
had was trying to convince 431 (I think) that I really did have a
SoundBlaster...

I think you can buy a preview of Win95 (full program) for like $30
from Microsoft.  You still have to buy Win95 when it comes out though
because it'll be the real commercial version with small bug fixes.

Agreed. I messed with WIN95 for a while. I have a DX2 with 16MB of ram.
ICR ran as good in WIN95 as it did in DOS6.22. 4 MB is just barely enough
to run the origional ICR. You really do need 8MB, especially if you
are running windows 3.1. CPU upgrades are very cheap now. You might want
to look into that too :-)

Why are you trying to run such resource intensive games with a
Graphic User Interface as an overhead?? Is Win '95 really such
a good platform for running games under? How does Win '95 manage
to run DOS programmes as well as DOS can?

Fraser.
