Hi,
I just installed N2 on a P200 and can't get the modem to respond. The
modem works fine in WIN95 on com2 and IRQ3 but N2 only offers COM1 or
COM4.
Any ideas on how to fix this.

john

I have the same problem and Sierra Tech told me to change my jumpers on
my modem. Can't understand why Nascar2 is the only software that this
has to be done for. We just have to wait for that major repair patch.

Try running MSD (a DOS-mode MicroSoft Diagnostics program). If that
program CAN see the additional COM ports, and N2 cannot, we'd like to
hear about it.
(And while you are corresponding with the modem vendor to get DOS
drivers for your modem, if needed, you can use MSD as a fairly good
proxy for N2. Rather than loading N2 each time you make a change, just
run MSD, which will give you the answer faster than loading N2...)

While I am sure that you are correct in stating that yours is not working,
mine happens to work just fine with the modem, an internal Zoom 28.8, on
COM2. I cannot explain why your is not working, but I hope that they do
not try to patch this, as mine, on two seperate systems, works just fine.
When you bootup the computer, how many serial ports are being reported?
What are the addresses? Can you setup your onboard serial ports ( if they
are onboard ) via the BIOS? Do you have two devices set to COM2? ie the
modem and one of the onboard serial ports? When this problem strikes,
have you ran MSD to see which ports the BIOS is reporting? If you have
done all this, I am at a serious loss as to what the problem is. I have
three serial ports configured in both of my systems, and N2 reports all
three ( COM1 ( mouse ) COM2 ( Modem ) COM4 ( Null Modem ) on both systems.

Why is it not a problem for Nascar 1 to find my modem to get on Hawaii
or race the guy across town? These are Dos games correct? Nascar2 is
just the only game I have that won't let me select com3 for my modem.
And whats worse I don't even know why I'm trying to get my modem to work
in Nascar2 as I don't know anybody that got there's to work either.

Robert,
You haven't wasted your time. I'm checking into all the questions you
asked me. I like your helpfulness better than what I got from Sierra
tech back in December, that I should change my jumpers on my modem. I'll
work on my problem, even though I don't have anybody to call yet and let
you know if I fixed it. Thanks again for your help.

Like I said before, I don't know what's going on with N2 and your system.
But mine, as well as the two other guys I play via the modem here, works
just fine. We are all running N2 on P5 75's ( badly ) through P5 133's.
The modem sections works fine for me. In fact, just like N1 did.
Last I read, yes, N2 is a DOS game. And you say your modem is on COM3? Is
your mouse on COM1, or is it a PS/2 mouse? If it and the modem are on the
same IRQ's, there will be problems with DOS based games.
If your mouse is on COM1, and your modem is on COM3, games that do not
require a mouse will/could possibly work fine. But since N2 requires a
mouse, if it and your modem are sharing a IRQ, then the mouse and modem
could be knocking heads. I had this happen with a DOS based terminal
program. The modem worked fine until I moved the mouse. BAM! Dropped
carrier.
But like you said, if you don't know anyone who can get theirs set up to
work either, you are in fact wasting your time.
And since you answered exactly NONE of the questions I asked about your
system configuration but instead simply stated that all other DOS games
worked fine, I guess I am just wasting my time attempting to help you.
Have a nice day,

Just goes to show ya there are problems and there are problems. My prob
is that the modem works fine in dos/win 95/win 3.11 in any game, and in
any mode except Nascar 2. N2 reports com1/2 and 4, so does the boot up
and so does MSD. I've reconfigured my bios until I feel like I should
be getting payed to test different configurations. I finally gave up.

Make sure you guys don't have a "WinModem", they won't run any dos
based program. Same thing happened to a friend of mine. Windows see's
your Com Port fine. But it's non existent as far as DOS.
Good Luck
