Which processes to leave running in Win98

I'm not sure exactly about the wheel, but I know that if you press Ctrl +
Alt + Delete then you should end every task EXCEPT for Systray and Explorer.
You might have one more task needed for your wheel but I couldn't tell you
what it would be called.

You can also try going to Start > Run and type msconfig.  This is a utility
in win98 that will allow you to determine what exactly is loaded during
bootup.  BE VERY CAREFUL HERE!  Only disable what you are sure you don't
need.

Basically, if you look at the bottom right of your taskbar after booting and
you have anything other than an icon of a speaker, then you are wasting
resources (performance).

Hope this helps.

Chaps,

In order to make sure that my PC is spending all it's available resources on
the sim I'm playing I want to kill all the un-neccesary processes, but I'm
not quite sure what to kill and what's needed.

I'm running win98 with a MSFF wheel.

Could anyone give me a list of what to leave running, please?

Thanks.

Explorer is the only thing you *need* running. If you're on a notebook, I'd
advise leaving Systray running too.( If you're running LiteStep, leave
LSWharf running instead of Explorer  ;-)

I'm running Explorer, Systray and Swtray. Explorer and Systray is
absolutely minimum, but you also need Swtray for your MSFF.

Get yourself the Enditall utility.  This allows you to close down all the
processes which aren't required at the touch of a button.  You can download
it from:

http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?b=pc...
=0011NB

I usually leave Explorer, Systray and Rnaapp running.

I also use Rambooster to free up memory before running sims.  I can usually
get 95Mb free Ram before starting a sim when using Rambooster and Enditall.
You can get Rambooster from:

http://www.sci.fi/~borg/rambooster/index.htm

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Phil

Not really!

it's basically a program that allows certain dll's (link library's) to run
as an application. (the more I read that sentence the more confusing it
looks :) ) . Anyway it's usually carried over from an early version of Win95
that is of course assuming you upgraded from 95 to 98. if not it's also used
by some fax/modem software. anyhow if you want to remove it permanently
you'll find in the sys.ini or win.ini a line that says run=rundll.exe just
remove it or better yet run msconfig and untick it just to test if anything
you want stops responding.

Blimey that was the short answer!

Cheers, Jason

Thanks Jason

Actually i installed w98 from a clean reformat, and never have installed
a modem in this thing.

Besides systray, swtray, and explorer thats all I have left to remove,
thanx

Oh btw, i notice in msconfig that i see some lines in there more than
once.  Loadpowerprofile, usually with rundll32.exe as the prog it runs.
Now i do notice that 3dfx tools also uses Rundll32.exe...

Do we need 3dfxtools running?

The only two things win98 needs running are "Explorer and Systray" I'm not
sure if your wheel need anything else though.

Hi Richard,

You need nothing...(except wheeldriver)
I've tried this one minute ago with F12k and a LWFF.

1. Unload everything from systray manually, except for the LWFF-control,
just disable the systray-icon.
2. Open explorer and browse to your cd, and run the file Autorun.EXE, which
displays a menu.
3. Press the windows Start-button, and select Shut down.
4. When the 'What do you want your computer to do?' -menu shows, press and
hold down CTRL-ALT-SHIFT and click cancel. This will unload Explorer(useful
for debugging shell-extensions ;-)
5. Use CTRL-ALT-DEL and remove everything exept the F12k autorun.exe, and
your wheeldriver executable. Systray might take 2 seconds to shut down, and
probably has to be forced.
6. If the F12k menu doesn't show, ALT-TAB one time, and it will show.
7. Press play...

If you'd like a better tool for viewing processes, download kerneltoys from
MS, and try out wintop.
(The Explorer isn't the windows executable, but merely a userInterface.)

Happy playing!

/Carl

That's the beauty of newsgroups.  With such a diverse group of people, I'm
surprized when someone DOESN'T know the answer...
