GPL - some more stupid questions

by Wolfgang Prei » Thu, 24 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I have to spend my time waiting for GPL some way or the other.
[And, Bruce, there's no objectionable material in this posting. :) ]

Heeeere we go:

Q1: In the demo, the only working instrument in the***pit is the rev
counter. The other clocks look like they *might* work in the full
version, though. My questions now are: will they work? and if yes,
what information is given there? (fuel? oil pressure? what else?)

Q2: Since I have only a low end machine (K6-200, Monster 1) and don't
want to spoil myself, I keep running the demo in 512xsomething
resolution. The instruments are a bit difficult to read in this setup.
Therefore the question: will there be an additional warning light for
low oil pressure, low gas? [I'm not sure if those racecars had these
lights, but I want them anyway. - Maybe there is objectionable
material after all, Bruce. :) ]

Q3: It has been commented recently that non-Intel chips might be a bad
choice for GPL due to their inferior FPU. Since I'm pondering an
upgrade right now (actually, I'm always *thinking* about upgrading),
my third set of questions: how does a K6-2 300 compare to a Celeron
300A regarding GPL?

the following around Wed, 23 Sep 1998 10:46:32 GMT,:

What 3d card do you have? How much L2 cache?

They can make a lot of difference.

PMFJI, but I've not followed the processor developments closely for
a while.  Would the Celeron be compatible with an Asus P2L97
motherboard?

Diamond Monster 1 and 1 MB L2 cache. I have different options for
upgrading right now, but only a limited supply of money. ;)

I could buy a new mainboard and a Celeron 300A which I may or may not
be able to overclock. If the overclocking works, this would be the
winner hands down. It would be the most expensive of my options,
though. (approx DM 650.- [1.80DM = $1.-] Actually, this is out of my
league currently.)

Another possibility would be to buy a K6-2 300, which would run in my

(DM 300.-)

I could also buy a super socket 7 board (probably the FIC VP 503+) and

multiplier can't go over 2.5 with this chip, but I'm sure it would
make at least 200MHz. It was one of the last chips marked as P166.
This would mean I was stuck with socket 7 technology for at least one
year, however.
(DM 180.-)

Or I could buy a Hercules Thriller 3D for about DM 180.- as well.

Or one 64MB DIMM (PC100 for upward compatibility with my next board)
for DM 180,-
.......

Overclocking this chip probably works. But I'm still waiting some
time. If I don't read many "help, my celeron doesn't work anymore"
messages within three months, I may follow that path, too. :)

50% increase in clockspeed seems a bit radical to me. I made good
experiences with overclocking in the 10 - 20% range, but 50? This
sounds too good to be true...

If I understand correctly, the celeron can be overclocked only by
busspeed, not by multiplier. Unless your board can do more than 66MHz,
you would be stuck (maybe not the right word in this context) with
300MHz. Having said that, I believe that you will find the necessary
info at Asus' homepage.

Hi Byron,

Does this mean that you are responable for the amount of fuel when you
setup the car?

Yes. The other main ones are fuel and oil pressure, but they are just for novelty
mainly. Believe me, you can tell when you run out/are running out of fuel or when the
motor drops a rod :) However, the fuel pressure gauge starts to drop with an increasing
accompanying of decreased engine power and spluttering until shutdown. It's great to have
a sufficient enough lead at Spa on the last lap and be able to do the last 1/2 lap mostly
in 5th and splutter over the line in 1st :))))))

Most definantly! In the setup options you see gallons plus the estimated laps. Tip - put
in at least 1 more gallon than it says :)

Plus oil temperature. In the beta, all 3 instruments work, especially
oil pressure, which is low when idling.
In the chase mode, OT, OP, FP rpm, speed, gear and fps are shown in
the bottom line of the screen.
