Does anybody know why I can't join or host races using a cable modem - I can
only connect via IPX, not TCP/IP (IP address option is not present). The
modem (3 Com cmx) is connected to the PC via an ethernet card.

any help would be much appreciated.

Create a file in your GPL directory called core.ini containing the
following two lines:

[ Communications ]
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1

you have to change the content of an .ini file. Look at the GPL help.txt
file. It will tell you which file to change and what to add.
