In the Sidewinder software make sure you turn off return to center.

I agree that this sounds like the problem.  If you set damping down real low
( I use 2) you should not have problems making quick adjustments.

I have a MSFF wheel but have never had the opportunity to try any of the
others for comparison. My question concerns the software damping as
mentioned by Alison Hine in her discussion on FF wheels. I have had extended
periods where I have tried FF enabled and disabled in Gpl. At present I have
it disabled. The reason is, that as my times have improved and I drive
nearer the "edge" I find I require more and more use of brief but rapid
opposite lock (usually when exiting corners under max accel. and correcting
slides). With FF enabled on the MS wheel the level of resistance (damping)
makes this very difficult and quite distracting. I have tried every variabe
of the 'damping' setting in the core.ini but it seems to have little effect.
Interestingly this damping is disabled in Rally Champ.2000  leading me to
think it is within Gpl and not the MS software. So I am wondering if others
with this particular wheel experience the same and are bothered by it and if
this to common to all FF wheels.    Cheers, Andrew.

Which genius at Microsoft is responsible for  the Sidewinder software? After
weeks being unable to find the "split axes" selection because the tab was
too dark to see I now find (thanks to Jeff Murchison JR) that I have had
centring turned on all this time. This is not anywhere in the Sidewinder
Profile Editor but back in good old Control Panel!

Not to mention the wheel's habit of powering up off-centre.

Anyway, I'm now happier with the feel and particularly with being able to
opposite lock without fighting the FF. Now all I have to do is learn how to
drive the car all over again...

Do people really lap Spa under 1:20? Hmmm.

I am glad I could help. It took me about 2 month before I found out about
turning of return to center in the controllers panel. Another thing I found
out a few weeks ago was turning the force feedback damping in the core.ini
to 600 would also give more feel.

Thats odd. The return to centre function( in the windows game controller
panel) is disabled in Gpl(when FFis enabled). Give it a try on all different
settings you will see what I mean. Anyway on someones advice I have disabled
FF and have found driving much more precise - an immediate 1sec time
improvement at Mexico to boot.
Cheeres, Andrew.
