Is there a way to limit the FPS on the Rendition Version of Indycar II?
When
there is no traffic around me the frame rate goes up into the 50-60 FPS
range
and is almost undriveable. It feels like you are driving in fast
forward. When
there are a number of other cars being drawn the frame rate drops to the
25-30
FPS range and is very smooth. Any ideas? Thanks.

There is a button combination that turns the limiter on and off, but
I've forgotten what it is.  See the readme in your Indycar folder for
all the Rendition hot-key combos.

Alt-T = Frame-limiter.  The other keys are:
================================

Alt-R:   Frame rate display toggle.

Alt-M:   Three-state toggle for mirror: none, medium detail,
high detail.  Defaults to medium.  Anti-aliasing takes
         place in hi-res mode only.

Alt-W:   Three-state toggle for weather: day, night, and rain.
This is a 'for fun / showing off' feature and is not a
realistic gameplay feature; e.g., traction does not change
         in 'rain' mode.

Alt-K:   Sky optimization toggle: This defaults to off.  Can speed
up frame rate at the expense of occasional graphical
glitches, especially on the horizon, when viewed at an
angle (like at Michigan when on a banked turn).  May
not be a significant speedup unless you are in Turbo
mode and / or running on a track with no textured sky
(clouds).  Only really useful for showing off "maximum
         speed mode".

[Technically, can causes glitches on any non-textured
polygon that spans entire screen horizontally, like
when going under some bridges or facing sideways]

Alt-A:   Anti-aliasing toggle.  Anti-aliasing smooths the jagged
edges of the graphics on screen.

Alt-T:   Timer toggle ('Turbo mode'): When the timer is 'off', the
physics runs at the frame rate: it will be slower than
reality at less than 30 frames/sec, and faster than reality
at greater than 30 frames/sec.  Advantage of 'off' is when
the timer is on, the frame rate cannot exceed 30 fps.  Can
cause sound problems, especially in big crashes with lots
of smoke and dirt where the frame rate becomes low.  Should
NOT be used in dual / multiplayer mode.  This is a 'for
fun / showing off' feature only and comes with no warranties.

Alt-X:   "Maximum Speed Mode": Frame rate display on, mirrors off,
sky optimization on, anti-aliasing off, timer off.  When
toggled off, reverses all these settings, regardless of
their previous values (i.e., restores default).

Print Screen    Dumps a 24-bit PCX screen shot to the race directory,
named ICR01.PCX, ICR02.PCX...; note that it always starts at
ICR01 and overwrites any existing PCX from a previous
         session.

Default settings:
         Anti-Aliasing on
         Medium-resolution Mirrors
         Timer on (realistic physics)
         Sky optimization off
         Day weather mode
         Frame rate display off

NOTE: These settings are not saved to disk between sessions.
(This file is (should) be in your ICR2-3D directory as ICR3D.TXT

Mark,

I think it is ALT-X or something.  This keeps the frame rate at
30fps no matter what.  Look in the readme.txt file and you will see a
whole list of ALT codes that do different things (Like turning on 3d
mirror detail!!!!)

Have fun,

Paul

You are running the game in Turbo mode - use ALT-T to turn it off.  All the
rendition commands and info are found in the readme.txt file on the CD.
There are additional Rendition only commands you will want to learn, i.e.
Anti-Aliasing, etc.  This is a great game and can be incredibly realistic
in Rendition mode.  Enjoy...

Step 1 (as always): RTFRF

(Read the README file...)

(Specifically as it pertains to CTRL-X and CTRL-T if I recall
correctly...)

By default, the game is limited to 30fps, which makes the action
occur at "normal" speed.  Hitting alt-x will turn off the frame
limiter, along with several image quality optimizations (such as
antialiasing), which causes the frame rate to be very high, and the
action to be in "fast motion" (i.e. disconnected from any reasonable
time base).  This mode is just for grins.  Play in the default mode
and you shouldn't have problems.  BTW, the alt-x is a toggle, so
hitting it a second time will turn the frame limiter and quality
features on.

&nbsp;I would just like to point out that a higher framerate does not make
the game go faster, but smoother. If I set the framerate to 25fps (SVGA)
in GP2, the game actually runs slower than at 17fps as my computer can't
handle it.
<BR>The problem you are experiencing seems like a patch job for Papyrus. :&nbsp;

You're complaining that the frame rate is too fast? Wow. That's the first
time I've heard that one.

<Ick! a load of HTML junk...>

Actually, on the Rendition version, it *does* make the game go
faster.  All Papyrus games have a maximum frame rate (ICR1 was 15 fps;
ICR2, N1, & N2 are 30 fps).  Rendition ICR2 has a special toggle
(Alt-T, Turbo mode) which disables this "governor".  This allows the
frame rate to go as high as the CPU/video/conditions allow.  A side
effect of disabling the governor is that the sim is no longer tied
into real time: if you run laps at 60 fps, you appear to going twice
as fast and they take only half as much real time as if you ran the
sim in non-Turbo mode.  Great sensation of speed!  You GP2 guys should
try it before you knock it!  :) :) :)

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?
