GPL troubles

by Jay Taylo » Sun, 09 Jun 2002 03:51:14

I recently decided to reload GPL, which I havn't run in awhile, and now I
can't seem to get it to run on my system.  I did a fresh install, with the
normal patches, the cpufix (which I've reinstalled several times to make
sure it did)and the DX7 and openGL fixes/patches.
My problem is when I go into the game everytime I try to get to the race
weekend the game gives me an error,
can't initailize the replay system, and it cancels the race. This happens in
Dx7, OGL, or software mode. However I can load up any of the replays that
come with GPL and they run fine, it just seems to fail whenever I actually
try to get into a session when you can drive the car.  All the other screens
work and I can get to the options and such fine.  Again this is on a bare
bones install of GPL, I have nothing but the patches added to it.  I know
this system ran GPL fine months ago, but I'm not sure what I would have
changed since them, except I added a soundblaster audigy card, instead of
the LIVE, I use to have.

My system info:
P4 1.7gig
768megs RDRAM
Geforce4 128 with 28.90 drivers. (I've tried a few different sets of drivers
back to the 21.83's with the same result.)
Sound blaster audigy platinum
Windows ME

Anyone have any ideas?

Here's your problem, you have to limit any Win9X OS to 512 MB ram to run GPL....anyone remember the
exact syntax?

GPL....anyone remember the
yes RIP OUT the extra chip.  You can make changes to windows to limit the
memory, you can create a ram disk, but all this does is add another process
running in the background.  Win9x can run dang near any program with
512megs...if you are convinced you need that extra ram, then junk win9x and
go XP.

Well I did upgrade to 768 awhile back so I guess that is possible.  However
I do use alot of ram with graphics and video editing I also do on my
machine.  Anyway I can fool GPL into not seeing all 768 megs, while leaving
it intact for the rest of my apps?

Jay I am sure there is, but I never had to do it, (still dont) but I am not
definite on this but there is a setting in the core.ini somewhere..  maybe
google search will turn something up?

GPL troubles

Well my problem is solved.  I have cacheman which is a memory tweeking
program on my system. When I poked around in it's options I found a option
to limit windows to 512 megs of RAM.  So I tried it and GPL ran fine.
So I just have to do some changing back and forth in cacheman, but atleast I
dont have to pull out dims<g>.
Thanks for the help guys.

And for those that don't have Cacheman, you can do the same with
"msconfig" under advanced properties

I had your problem too, and your solution works as I found out, but a
better solution so that you don't have to keep switching back and
forth in cacheman is to include the following lines in your core.ini
file:

[ Replay ]
replayMemoryOverride = 65535

This tells GPL to only use 64 Mbytes for memory (you can use some
other figure, but that is plenty--the problem when you have more than
512 M is that GPL gets confused when setting up the memory for the
replay and this solves the problem). Just make sure that you are
really changing the core.ini file--if I recall correctly there is
another file called core.sample or something like that which comes
with gpl and you can't tell which file is which unless you have
windows set up so that the full filename is shown. You also need to
change core.ini to set up force feedback by the way--I realized I
wasn't modifying the correct file when force feedback didn't work for
me.

Add the following lines to core.ini (or edit the existing line if it's
there)

[ Replay ]
ReplayMemoryOverride = 256000

This tells GPL to use a replay buffer of 256000Kbytes (~256Meg).  I think
the problem is that with 768M of main memory, GPL tries to allocate more
than 512M for the replay buffer, which Windows doesn't allow.
