CART Racing over modem

I'm trying to connect CR using multiplayer. Both computers are using USR
modems and we're both using the installed string. My modem is a 56K
(V.90) version, the other is a 33.6. We get connected and get the
message "Waiting for Remote". After a couple of minutes and no movement
we give up.

During this time the modem are lighting up like christmas trees.

Any suggestions?
