N2 Calib.val file question ?

by William Dahm » Fri, 06 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I have a question concerning the calib.val file in nascar2.  first I
have to explain what I want to do so things will make sense.  I suppose
you could skip to the part after the so If you want

I would like to be able to reduce the steer lock in N2, on most tracks I
want less than 5 deg.  This is because I have a T2 without a
thrustmaster game card.  It is quite twichy.
In ICR2 I often use around 1/3 of the origional wheel lock on oval
tracks and 1/2 of the origional wheel lock on road/street courses.  This
works well and I can drive ICR2 quite fast.
The problem in N2 is that the wheel lock starts out low with the given
setups and not being able to go below 5 deg makes 3/4 of the tracks
unplayable for me.

        so . . .

I'd like to change the calib.val file so the outer numbers are, say, 2X
as big as they are right now.  Ex. say the numbers for the steering
wheel are about 175   775   1375.  Id like to change them to -425
775   1975 so the program would think I was only turning the wheel 1/2
way.
This would then enable me to get the wheel lock low enough.

I looked at the calib.val files (made many and looked at all of them).
they used letters different from the standard letters but I have a book
to tell me how to make any of them by holding alt and typing a 3 number
code.
I still can't figure out how the letters store the 9 values of
calibration.  They seem to be in some wierd configuration that is
different each time.
If anybody knows how to get what calibration numbers are wanted by
typing in different letters then please tell me.  Anybody who is good
with this type of stuff please try to help me figure it out.  Thanks for
reading this post and helping me out if you can.

The calib.val file stores the information in HEX format.  This is a
numbering system base 16.  It appears at first glance that calib.val
stores 2 numbers for each axis (minimum & maximum).  It looks like they
have reserved 4 bytes for each value.  The first 2 sets appear to be for
joystick 1 and the second set is for joystick 2.  If an axis is not
calibrated the value is stored as 4 bytes of 256 (ff in hex).

It looks like the first set of numbers is for the steering on your T2.
If you want to enter -145 for the minimum try the following ALT/Number
pad numbers:
087 254 256 256   (translate to 57 FE FF FF in hex)

For the maximum try the following ALT/Number pad numbers:
095 005 000 000  (translate to 5F 0F 00 00 in hex)

This is just a wild guess, but give it a try.
