Yup, and CD's don't sound as good a concerts either.

The sound system that most pcs are equipped with is certainly not going to
reproduce the sheer volume of sound that you experienced at the live GP.
What are we talking about, 110-120dB?!?!

I'm not sure what the 3D sound cards do for the spatial properties of sound
but in order to get even somewhat near the high volume of a GP car up close,
you would need a several hundred watt amplifier and a very efficient set of
speakers, as well as some very understanding neighbors.

Awesome sound will arrive eventually.Kaemmer stated in his interview
at the Apex that GPL2(if it ever comes out)will have much improved
sounds, graphics and AI.He also went on to predict photo realistic
graphics in the next five years for racing sims:)

Oh yeah I didnt mean sheer volume. Gpl up full in a ferrari gives me a
headache after a few minutes anyway. Just the guts of the sound is what is
missing. Sorry for the poor description but I think it simply boils down to
a single sound sample being stretched to shift the pitch just doesnt cut it
with me anymore.

If you record properly at a concert they sound 100% accurate? I didnt just
mean volume. Although the volume of 800hp F1 cars did leave an impression on
me :)

I haven't heard the real thing (yet!)  But I thought the sound in GP2 was
pretty good.  It had a raspy mechanical character.  Especially the
downshifting.

You are right about that.  The problem right now is that the engine sounds
are just a quick sample that as you gain RPM, they change the speed of how
fast it plays the sound.  So they are not dynamic, real engines are dynamic
and have an attitude of their own (not to mention, MUCH LOUDER).

Indeed. At best you see most games interpolate between an idle and
full-throttle sound through the RPM range. There are better ways to
accomplish the generation of accurate sounds for a given RPM and throttle
position.

Also getting a decent sound card helps a ton. The on-motherboard sound for
even the best systems these days falls way short of what an add-on card can
do for under $100. Not to mention that many motherboard joystick ports also
... well ... suck.

You can get some decent sound now under acceleration.  What's really missing,
as Berno noted, is those Nuclear blasts that accompany downshifts.  The
resonace of accelerating sounds and decelerating ones is completely different,
and varies by motor.  The four-rotor Mazda AE99 GT1 car may be the most extreme
example.  The first time I heard one braking into a corner, I was sure the
engine had let go BIG-TIME.  Then he accelerated out of the corner, merrily on
his way, sounding for all the world like a sweet 12-cylinder Ferrari!

Sound in all racing sims suck!!!

I just installed Patricks GPL sounds yesterday.
It is awesome.
I disliked the default engine sounds from the start.
Harsh, and unnatural.
I tried a couple of the other sounds available to.
They don't compare to Patricks.
Actually sampled from vintage racecars.
Sweet and natural, but with balls.
I get so caught up in how REAL it sounds that I forget to brake.
He even has a much need sound that makes the tiresqueal sound
louder. Much better playability with out the engine drowning out
the little feedback you get from the car.
