SideWinder products achieve Windows XP certification?

Ok I noticed this on the Microsoft website. I've been racing N2002 in xp
home edition forever now. My understanding was that the sidewinder software
(version 4.0) didn't work with xp, which in turn meant that you could not
set the gas and brake as two different axis.

Does this Microsoft revelation mean the software works and you can now run
the gas and brake each on a seperate axis.

Has anybody tried this or does this stated cerification not mean a hill of
beans in this crazy mixed up world?

The Sidewinder software for non-USB joysticks will not work in XP.

However, I'm fairly certain that the Sidewinder driver that comes with XP
has split axis throttle and brake (at least for the force feedback wheel).
It's been a while since I used my MSFF wheel (I upgraded to a Momo) but I'm
pretty sure that was how it worked.

Of course, you still can't program the buttons, force feedback doesn't work
properly and sometimes the controller will stop working in the middle of a
game, but other than that ...   :)

There is a cure for this problem,i found it today whilsy trying to cure my
own,same problem.

On a Win XP system, the MS FF usb wheel will work perfectly depending on your
motherboard chipset.

Mine that i purchased last week was one it wouldnt work with
properly,intermittent at best.

So i e mailed Microsoft, who said that i should contact my motherboard
chipset manufacturer to see if they had produced a USB Registry patch for
Sidewinder in XP.

I went to the SIS Chipset site and low and behold a little 54kb patch for
that exact purpose.

Downloaded it,installed it,rebooted.

EUREEKA.....wheel works perfectly, messed about alot, switched on and off alot
to try and upset it...but no its fine.

So,my advice is to e mail your chipset people and ask for a patch to be done
if they havent done one yet, refer to SIS's example if needed.

Good luck

Brian..:-))

You are lucky enough to have the 'correct' type of chipset according to the
Microsoft e mail reply i received.

Until today...i wasn't :-(

But now i am patched :-))

Huh, I have the USB version running in XP with a split axis, I loaded
the software that came with the wheel and I am able to program all of
the buttons.

Well, thank god.  I don't know if I would have the patience to work
out a chipset problem to get a usb device to work.

However, I have an Asus A7v333 (or something like that) with USB 2.0
I was having trouble getting the Asus supplied USB 2 drivers to work,
so I disabled USB 2 (I don't have any usb 2 devices yet) and just used
the std usb along with the drivers shipped by ms in XP, so maybe that
is the difference.

You have mentioned one of the things that makes a mockery out of Microsoft's
WHQL Certification.

Yes, the 4.0 CD that comes with the MSFFW (USB Only) DOES work fine in XP
and 2K.

Just disregard the warning when you install it :)

It makes me laugh to no end that Microsoft granted WHQL certification to
it's OWN software that complains that it isn't compatible when you try to
install it.

If any other manufacturer tried to do that, MS would never let them.

This proved to me once and for all that WHQL is a joke, and I don't blame
manufacturers for not bothering with it.

Ditto.

The USB version of the MSFFW with the included 4.0 Software CD works fine.

If it complains then it's not certified.

Yep - the key phrase in my post was: "non-USB".

USB versions should have no problem at all.

Yes, it IS CERTIFIED.  Microsoft proudly proclaims this on their site.

That is the lunacy of it all.

Larry,it appears you missed my earlier post :-))

I went searching for a USBfilter driver as you suggested and found a patch
on my motherboard chipset's site.

It is described as a MS Windows XP patch for USB Apps.

http://www.sis.com/support/driver/utility.htm

Please look,as you helped me look for it :-))

Join in my eureeka moment...lol

Many thanks Larry mate...truly.

So it fixed it ?

Cool :)

That's years of fighting with VIA that came up with that one :)
