MS Sidewinder and XP problems........HELP!

by shane » Sun, 26 Sep 2004 05:28:51

Recently upgraded to Win XP Home. Have re-installed all my favorite
programs, etc.....but......when I go to re-install my MS Sidewinder
*** software
(MS FF Wheel/pedals), I get an error message saying that it is
incompatable with this version of Windows. I've searched all over
Microsoft's sites, all they supply me with was to charge me $35 for
them to tell me that XP doesn't support it. Hmmmm......a Microsoft
product NOT supported by another Microsoft product!?!?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.......

Thanks!!

Ignore that "warning" & install anyway, especially if you have the USB
version.  the software (as it installs should say 3.x)

(if you have the Gameport version, you might not have any choice, as I dont
know if it will install anyhow)

Gameport support has virtually been dropped in XP for every controller if
your is a gameport model.

I'm having almost the same problem here. My USB Sidewinder works fine
with 98, but the built-in XP drivers don't calibrate properly and don't
support dual-axis anyway.

The Sidewinder 4.0 software (for USB) can be found on the Net, but
although I made it install in both normal and compatibility mode without
error messages, it just doesn't want to install properly: the extra
Sidewinder options in the XP game devices control panel just dont' show up.

So what are we supposed to do now, I wonder? Anybody got any positive
experiences / suggestions?

Regards, Ruud

If its gameport, youre screwed as it doesnt work properly.

If its USB you have to search to download the 4.0 drivers which you cannot get from the MS site,
they only have the 3.0 drivers even though the 4.0 drivers come on the cd with USB wheels.

Its beyond belief they dont support their own hardware and dont even supply a download of drivers if
  your disk is scratched.

The thing is: XP don't support the old technic of the game port anymore. You
have to buy a usb wheel. I had exactly the same problem, bougth me a
gameport card and it even wouldn't go. Then I sold my game port wheel (ebay)
and the new wheel (also Microsoft MSFF) is working like a charme.

Ya RUUD,  If you have heard, MISCROSHAFT (ms) more or less removed gameports
from compatability lists for XP.  hell for 2 years now, most "major"
retailers dont even give you a gameport (Dell, hp, compaq etc...)

Um, if you'd like to read my earlier text (see below), you might notice
something about the kind of Sidewinder I have and was referring to,
actually...

ak!  missed that 1st time around.  I still say that the "4.0" version of the
drivers comes on a disk with the usb version of the wheels that doesnt
obviously say 4.0 anywhere on it.  But, damnit now I have to check when I
get home to see exactly is on my cd's.  I could burn & mail you a copy.  I
never have had a problem with xp & the USB software.
