F1RS or MGPRS2?

by J. P. Hovercraf » Tue, 08 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hello all,

I'm interested in general impressions from people who have run both F1RS
and MGPRS2.

Aside from the obvious graphics improvement in MGPRS2 (and you may want
to debate this, too...8^)...), which delivered the more satisfying
racing experience for you? ...and has anyone raced MGPRS2 on the
Internet? What did you think? Did it work? How's the latency?

I'm looking at current F1 sims and I'd be glad of any input to help me
make a choice.

Thanks,

Kim Price

P. S.   I'm using J. P.'s account to post this. We've been racing GPL on his
LAN tonight.

F1RS or MGPRS2?

I suggest F1RS for a better experience, but it doesn't have any real
multiplayer racing implemented in it.  Meanwhile, some would say that MGPRS2
has a much less satisfying racing (both are poor, but MGPRS2 is mediocre to
my eyes), but still it has a online racing system that isn't really good
neither.

If you want Net racing, there is no current F1 game that is axed as much as
Papyrus titles for it.

F1RS or MGPRS2?

[This followup was posted to rec.autos.simulators and a copy was sent to
the cited author.]

This newsgroup has discussed this issue in quite some detail many times
in the past, but as it happens, I prefer Monaco Grand Prix Racing
Simulation 2 far more than F1 Racing Simulator. It may not have the
official license, but it's easy to download the latest carsets from the
internet.

The graphics in MGPRS2 are an improvement over F1RS, but not by very
much.

In fact, very little has changed in the sim overall. Besides a few more
graphical options and updated tracks, there really isn't much else to
encourage you to buy this title over F1RS, except that it is still a
better product.

And selling for around 12 these days, you'd be nuts not to purchase it.

F1RS or MGPRS2?

by scrc » Tue, 08 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I don't agree with you Neo. Things did change. What changed is the way you
have to set up a car before it runs a decent lap. After having learned how
to do this in F1RS I turned to MGPRS2. First of all, all my setups in F1RS
lacked a decent grip in the front. Also, with aids off I could hardly keep
the cars on the track, even after finding decent setups in general. But it's
a game, as is F1RS and it is in no way true Formula 1. But if you ask me
which one is more realistic, than from the setup point of view I would say
F1RS is the better one (although both have weird characteristics). And if you
wish, you can get a 1999 race in F1RS as well.
The only thing I would call an negative aspect is the graphics thing. MGPRS2
runs at 800*600, but F1RS only uses 640*400. The latter is a shame because
my videocard has much improved drivers for 800*600, not for standard
VGA-resolution.
But in the end, if you have to buy the game, i think there's not much of a
choise. F1RS is not available anymore in any shop for a long time (accept in
a dump-shop maybe). MGPRS2 is the cheap version now, since somewhere at the
end of this year there will be a follow-up by Ubisoft, as I've been told.
Advice: copy it from friend ? Take F1RS. Have to buyt: not much choise,
MGPRS2.

F1RS or MGPRS2?

I really don't understand this debate at all!
MGPRS2 is better than F1RS in every respect - graphics (higher res),
physics, AI and setups particularly.  The way the setup options changed the
cars in F1RS was plain silly, but in MGPRS2 they are much more realistic.
What you have to realise is that all F1RS setups have to be dumped if
playing MGPRS2 because the cars react in a very different way.
Go for MGPRS2 with the last patch and all the addons from the 'Unofficial'
site.

F1RS or MGPRS2?

You know, when that notorious and famed sim (G_L) came out, I found MGPRS2
to be rather dull (canned spins, etc.)

BUT--not too terribly long ago, I went back and did a few things which have
changed my opinion a bit.  I raised the steering ratio to around 16-18
degrees in all setups & I turned off the brake help.

I've left the wheelspin help on (it's just too, too sensitive w/o it), and
for now have left the anti-skid help on (because I'm too, too stupid)--and
believe it or not, it's a different game from what I had remembered.  I have
even caught and corrected a few of those canned spins!

And there's an ultra-cool FF patch out that adds some serious tactile
feedback.

But the change in car physics is more of a tweak than an actual
'change'.

F1RS is almost undriveable, I agree.

What's better about F1RS than MGPRS2, besides an official license?

This threads makes those games look like excellent ones, but they are not,

I noticed the same thing about Anti-Spin. Turn it off and it's a totally
different game.

Abandon Ubi Logic and deny to subscribe to the "all helps off is the most
realistic setting" and you'll have some fun with it.

I even made the "Expert" level at the RS2League with Anti-Spin on, and
everyone loves it a lot more. It's more intuitive as a whole (although still
not the best physics).

In all... I like RS2 for some fun in a modern F1 car until the new ones come
out from EA and Geoff.

If you decide to race online... check out : www.rs2league.com and have a few
rounds.

Cheers,

Shumi

I have an OEM copy of F1RS for sale.  There is no manual, but one is
included on the disc.  Make me an offer.

Rubbish! MGPRS2 has some problems, but on the whole it is the best modern F1
sim out there, especially with all the addons from the 'Unofficial' site.
