The graphics card on my IBM P-133  16Mb RAM Aptiva is ATI Mach 64 with
3D acceleration (2 Mb), latest ATI drivers, Direct 3D and DirectX 3.
After installation, I tried to run it but it says I don't have
sufficient hardware for the damn thing.  Is it true?  Do I need a 4Mb
card like those mentioned on the box?  How big a market can Psygnosis
expect if that's a damned *requirement*, at least for now?  They
should be renamed to PsyCHOsis.

Thanks for any advice.

Andrew.

I think it's been WIDELY advertised as a game specifically for users
with a high-end 3D card (Read: 3DFX, and others), alot of cards may say
"3D" on the box, but they really don't cut it. The market they are
expecting is the market that is on the horizon, because, like it or not,
games are going to require better and better hardware in the future. Go
to http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/97/06/12/msft_x000_4.html and read about
the OpenGL issue with Microsoft and most big name game designers.
Microsoft's Direct3D is too hard to design for, and Windows95 doesn't
support OpenGL very well, and that is the direction of tomorrows games.
So for now, you need an expensive card with patches specifically for
each game to support the accelleration since Win95 won't. Of course,
this is all my own opinion, but I believe you get the idea.

But not in Hong Kong where I live.

When the '95 season in the game would be ancient history.

Agreed.  That's the way how vendors keep us buying.

The link has expired.

Why can't they just get it right in DOS, like Rally Championship?

Anyway, thanks .

erm.....ATI Mach 64 WITH 3d acceleration? nope there's no such card out
there...the ATI Mach 64 is 2D only...ATI Rage cards are 3d accelerating,
though they're laughably pathetic. Methinks thou needeth to brush up on the
basics of 3d.

No doubt.  I was hoping that DirectX 5 would provide bindings to
OpenGL, but I guess it won't since all of the developers who signed
that letter probably already have the DirectX5 beta.  I have no doubt
that OpenGL is the direction that simulations will take in the future.
It really is a bummer that Microsoft won't realize how horrible
Direct3D is and just support OpenGL, since it is already a proven 3d
API.

Just a thought.

Andrew,

I feel sorry for you buying this piece of crap.  The last thing
Psygnosis made that was any good was Destruction Derby 1 -- most
everything else has been ***ever since.

Oh well, I'm not holding out much hope for Thunder Truck Rally ...

Yes and Yes.  The ATI is fairly underpowered as 3d accelrators go.  I
think that Matrox Mystiqe is the lowest 3d accelerator which works with
F1.

I too feel sorry for you.  I've heard the game itself is totaly
unrealistic and falls far short of GP2.

You guys are way too *** these things. Where does Formula 1 claim
to be a simulation in the same realm as GP2 or Indy Car II? I just
bought it yesterday and for what it is it is awesome. I find it just
as realistic as Edio's Formula 1 but more fun. It is definitely arcade
but there are several games out there that are much more arcade then
this. If you have a 3dfx card this is the most awesome game out yet
that uses it.
