Welcome to the downforce-free zone of GPL; Motor from God, tires from hell!
Some of the laps that were included with GPL DO spend an inordinate amount of
time going sideways(not Alison's, though:-)). While it's fun to do, it really
isn't the quickest way around. Check out some hotlaps from
http://gpl.gamesmania.com/ and see how the seriously fast guys do it. But keep
in mind those laps were done with version 1.0, which allowed a 1 inch ride
height and used marginally different physics than the patched version, 1.1. If
you're using 1.1, you can't go below 2.5 inches. The laptimes will be off a
touch from the low-rider times at most tracks, but you'll find the car tracks
straighter and is easier to control at the limit.
In a properly-executed turn, you WILL hear tire squeal (also under braking),
but you WON'T be sideways or leaving skid marks on the track. Think slight
drift, not big slide; kind of like the motorbike guys do it. And pay attention
to the pedals. In GPL, the throttle and brake do as nearly much to steer the
car as the wheel. You'll learn better pedal control with GPL in a month than
with any other sim in a year. Be patient......It WILL come.....
Cheers,
Steve B.
