I know exactly what you mean. I would guess you are in the Lotus and on
the point of giving the game up as flipping impossible. I've been there
- I'm still not a fast driver but I can tell you how to get off where
you are.
If you are in the Lotus, get out and step into a Coventry and download
Alison Hine's excellent setups from:
http://www.nh.ultranet.com/~alison/gpl/
This will give you a car that drives much easier than the Lotus on
default settings. You can earmark the Lotus for later, but ignore it for
now.
Find a speed at which you can safely get around the track and work to
drive smoothly around following the racing line as closely as you can.
Don't stamp on the brakes at corners but ease them down gently to about
half way down making sure that you don't lock up the wheels. Do all your
braking in a straight line at first. Trail braking is for later. Go
round smoothly and turn just as much as intuitively feels obvious.
Again, speed scrubbing - which it sounds like you are trying to do - is
for later. As you exit the corner gradually increase the throttle - if
you stamp on it you will most likely spin. Concentrate on consistency
and smoothness - speed will come later. Gradually you can pick up speed
as you can be confident of not spinning. Soon you will get to 1:33 at
Monza and you can consider other cars, other setups and other
techniques, but until you master the basics there is no point in trying
to be fancy.

Paul
