GPL Speed in Corners

GPL Speed in Corners

I was previously thinking that the corners were unbelievably slick until I
noticed that I am probably going much faster through them than what it
"feels" like from the sensation of speed that you get. I'm using automatic
shifting and I noticed that, even though I seem to be slowing way down for
that last turn at the Glen, the game only shifts down to 3rd gear! I thought
I was having to slow down to about 15mph to make it around this turn, but
apparently the simulation has me going a lot faster if it's taking the turn
in 3rd gear. That's probably why I often spin on curves where I think that
I'm really going slowly! There must be a little something missing here that
allows you to judge your speed accurately.

You'll also laugh at this one, but it took me quite a few laps to realize
that the time shown on the pit board as you go by is the time from your
*previous* complete lap, not the one that you're just finishing! This is
100% realistic as the drivers had no in-car communication or any way to know
their times until they came back around by the pits. However, it really had
me screwed up for a while until I figured out what was going on!

The automatic transmission is very slow on shifting down. Even more so
than the one in ICR2. I usually can't be bothered with shifting
manually either (since I keep forgetting it :), but I love doing it in
GPL. Try shifting for yourself, it will give you a much better
impression of your actual speed - and it's fun! :) After a while, you
can tell by the sound of the engine how fast you are going in a given
gear.

Same here. :) I was astounded how the guy with the board could know
how fast I was *before* I crossed the start/finish line... Took me a
long time to figure this one out. Another thing that puzzled me was
that the red hand in the tachometer seemed to change position. I
initially took it for a rev limiter signal, but realized later on that
it is a pointer that gets dragged by the actual hand of the tachometer
and indicates the highest revs during the actual session.
