GPL and Linux, forget it

Hello,

I just installed RedHat Linux on my system, and following the Linux port
demands going on, I just have to get some things down on reality.

Have anyone thought about controlling the car in a LinuxGPL ?

There is probably gameport-support in Linux by now, but what about the force-
feedback support. I can't really see Microsoft making drivers for my MS FF for
Linux.

I really don't think that to drive GPL in Linux is worth the cost of no
forcefeedback.

90% of drivers for Linux are made in reverse ingenering by a private personne.
So u just have to wait for a sim pilot , that use FF wheel, that be a good Linux
programmer,
and have lot of time, want to write it .... we can wait lot of time :o(

i agree.

Point taken, but then a plain server should be developed. And that would not
be the same as porting GPL to Linux.

GPL and Linux, forget it

Well, then MS will be left in the dust. ;-) Logitech actively supports
their hardware with Linux (or at least they support the guy writing
the drivers), but I cannot say if Logitech have a decent FF wheel
on offer.

I would love to give up FF for a stable OS that's not crashing on me
with superb network performance, but then again all I have for
driving is an ancient, though valiant, T2.

Regards,

Uwe

well, 1st off: I tried to drive without FF lately and couldn't keep my
toad on the track ;-)
2nd: I agree with the network performance, but after all it isn't that
critical with GPL than say quake ...
and finally: I doubt that the reason of GPL crashing is the OS - I
played lots of gl-quake and halflife and that sort on networksessions
for many hours nonstop with the same hardware- and driver-configuration
and it seems that GPL is just more buggy, especially in the use of glide
...

Woah - I thought this thread was about Linux - where can I buy this
stable OS you're talking about?

Yes, there is gameport support in Linux.

AFAIK, the LWFF is supported only under Win98 in USB mode, and only
under Win95/Win98 in serial mode.  Logitech doesn't even fully support
NT, let alone Linux.

It's a chicken/egg problem.  It's not worth the trouble to write
game-oriented Linux drivers until there are games, and it's not worth
porting the games until there are drivers.  Well, we're starting to
see the 3D card drivers, and the PCI sound card drivers, and better
general joystick support, and some USB support.  And we're starting
to see some games.

Once we get some games that use FF ported to Linux, someone will write
some FF drivers for some FF device.

If you want GPL under Linux, buy Loki's ports of Civ: CTP and Myth
II.  Buy that Quake 1 Linux pack.  Linux is attracting some attention,
but only a strong sales record for Linux ports will attract more ports.

If GPL were ported to Linux, I'd buy it immediately, no questions
asked, as a sign of support.  But I'd play the Windows version instead
until I had force feedback drivers for Linux.  If Act Labs or
Microsoft (it could happen :-> ) had Linux drivers before Logitech did,
I'd buy a new wheel.
