Yes, there is gameport support in Linux.
AFAIK, the LWFF is supported only under Win98 in USB mode, and only
under Win95/Win98 in serial mode. Logitech doesn't even fully support
NT, let alone Linux.
It's a chicken/egg problem. It's not worth the trouble to write
game-oriented Linux drivers until there are games, and it's not worth
porting the games until there are drivers. Well, we're starting to
see the 3D card drivers, and the PCI sound card drivers, and better
general joystick support, and some USB support. And we're starting
to see some games.
Once we get some games that use FF ported to Linux, someone will write
some FF drivers for some FF device.
If you want GPL under Linux, buy Loki's ports of Civ: CTP and Myth
II. Buy that Quake 1 Linux pack. Linux is attracting some attention,
but only a strong sales record for Linux ports will attract more ports.
If GPL were ported to Linux, I'd buy it immediately, no questions
asked, as a sign of support. But I'd play the Windows version instead
until I had force feedback drivers for Linux. If Act Labs or
Microsoft (it could happen :-> ) had Linux drivers before Logitech did,
I'd buy a new wheel.
