F1 2001, DXTWEAK and F1 2002

by Txl » Fri, 05 Jul 2002 17:55:54

Hello

I've reinstalled F1 2001 to play the GT3 mod and of course the controller
setting sucks, i've reduced a bit the x axis sensitivity to compensate but
it's still very difficult to drive.

I know I can work my way around this problem with DXTWEAK (version 1 or 2)
but the question is, will DXTWEAK also affect the calibration/settings for
my other games (RT and F1 2002), I have read here that it won't destroy GPL
or other sierra games (N4 and N2002) becuase they use their own calibration
but what about RT and F1 2002.

Since apparently the problem is only in F1 2001 would it be possible for a
code genius to "hack" the original calibration settings so we could have
"negative deadzone" in the game calibration, it would solve everything.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm running Win ME and a Guillemot Ferrari FFB Wheel and I have found
DXTWEAK2 to be a good solution. The recent update to version 2 allows you to
save any setup you do and then either load it silently with an icon/shortcut
or run it with command line options.

I wrote a simple batch file which first runs the DxTweak command line with
the F1 2001 setup and then runs F1 2001 straight after. After I exit F1 2001
the batch file's DOS box is still there waiting for me to hit a key. When I
do, it loads the DxTweak defaults again. There may be a better way to do
this so anyone is welcome to suggest ideas.

If you don't like the batch file idea you can simply have a DXTWEAK icon for
F1 2001 and one to return everything to the defaults. Just run the F1 2001
one before you play and run the defaults one afterwards.

I've had no problems with any other games - the DxTweak changes are
completely reversable in my experience.

Good luck.

ok, thanks a lot for your idea.

So let's say i make a "tweaked" icon for F1 2001 and the gt mod and some
"back to normal" icons for F1 2002 and RT which would automatically load
dxtweak "normal" settings before launching F1 2002 and RT I would be all
set....

Sounds good...

Hey Krunch, I too have a Guillemot Ferrari FFB Wheel, but I'm not sure which
settings to use in DXTweak2 for this wheel. Would you be so kind as to help
me out, what settings do you use?

BTW, do you use Thrustmapper? I installed it last night, and it won't
recognize my wheel? When I try to create a profile, in the accessories combo
box, I have no wheel to select, but my wheel is plugged in, and working
fine.

Thanks!

F1 2001, DXTWEAK and F1 2002

the settings are actually for direct X not the wheel.  So it shouldn't be
too different.  You are looking for a reported value of 32768 for each pedal
axis.  You can get very close to that by using these numbers for each
separat pedal axis.
min - 0  cen - 254  max - 290
for nascar heat I have a separate profile that uses
min 0 cen - 254 max - 290.  Here I don't care what the value is, but I'm
looking to extend the pedal range.  For some reason the thrustmapper
software often defaults the brake pedal to a digital input.
As far as the wheel not being recognized.  Go to the game controllers
control panel and check which id # the wheel is on.  If this is your only
wheel/pedal you should be using id# 1.
.good luck

Yes, I only have that one wheel, so hopefully the problem is something
simple as the id# not being correct.

Thanks Dave!

There is a simple solution for the F12001 controller  problems.   "EA....
Ring Papyrus and ask how to do it right." Then release a patch to fix your
F#$%up.

Well, yours may have different numbers but the concept should still work.
Basically I haven't touched the steering (X Axis) and I simply made the
Centre values for the Y and Z Axes exactly the same as the Max values.
That's all you need to do. I also increased the Min values a tiny bit which
makes sure the pedals reach their full values in the game but its not really
necessary.

Here is my Default Setup:

X Axis - Deadzone = 0 ; Min = 0 ; Cen = 2048 ; Max = 4096
Y Axis (brake)  - Deadzone = 0 ; Min = 0 ; Cen = 255 ; Max = 510
Y Axis (Throttle) - Deadzone = 0 ; Min = 0 ; Cen = 128 ; Max = 255

Here is my F12001 Setup:

X Axis - Deadzone = 0 ; Min = 0 ; Cen = 2048 ; Max = 4096 (didn't touch
these)
Y Axis (brake) - Deadzone = 0 ; Min = 10 ; Cen = 510 ; Max = 510
Y Axis (Throttle) - Deadzone = 0 ; Min = 5 ; Cen = 255 ; Max = 255

I couldn't use Thrustmapper either no matter what I tried - it just doesn't
work with Guillemot wheels I'd say.

By the way - Don't load DXTWEAK2 when your wheel is SWITCHED OFF. I lost my
saved setups and had to do them again (annoying 1 minute's work :).

Cheers.
Neil (Krunch).

[snipped]

I don't think Thrustmapper works with the Guillemot wheels. I tried for ages
and it just wouldn't recognise the wheel.

I think you are right on this one. I sent an email to Thrustmaster about
this (no answer yet), and when I went onto their forum, I found other people
with this problem too (I'm not sure, but some might be using the
Thrustmaster version and not the Guillemot version). One guy wrote that he
uses RB-Joy instead of Thrustmapper, and it's working perfectly.

I just downloaded RB-Joy and I'll try it out tonight. Basically all I want
to do is map the "2" key to one of my buttons on the wheel so that I can
switch the HUD on and off quickly on F1 2001 (or F1 2002 when I get it)
without having to reach for my keyboard.

Thanks for the tip with DXTweak.
