HELP ME TOO! LWFF probs!!!!!

by Matt Lanze » Fri, 11 May 2001 20:52:40

My computer for some reason won't recognize my LWFF, which I've had for
18 months and has always worked perfectly. I do have a toddler that
likes to sporadically beat on the keyboard when I turn my back, so that
*might* be my problem. Maybe he was able to disable/screw something
up...

Anyhow...

I only have the left LED light burning on the wheel now... the right one
won't light.
When I start my computer, the wheel will twitch a bit, but it will not
do the full calibration thing it used to.
When I click on the profiler, it gives an error message saying that it's
not hooked up.
I had a shortcut to "game controllers" (in the control panel) on my
desktop... now that shortcut doesn't work.
Where it used to say "game controllers" in the control panel, it now
says "*** options"

All cables *ARE* hooked up, and the unit has power.

Please help... Another weekend without my racing fix is gonna drive me
to do something constructive for a change!!!!

First question would have to be is it the Serial or the USB Wheel? If it is
the Serial version have you messed with your sound card lately? (IE: removed
it from the computer etc.)? Do you have a different
controller/Joystick/gamepad you can connect to it to see if the Gameport is
working? If it is the USB version, are you sure the plug is in the USB port
all the way? Have you done anything that could have messed up the drivers
for the USB port etc.? Have you recently done a re-install of Windows etc.?

My only suggestion without knowing these things would be to check all the
cables etc. for continuity with a multimeter to make sure that the wires
didn't fry out or anything like that within the cables.

That adds up. The right LED shows that the unit is talking to the LWFF
software AFAIK.

Mine is the same, I hadn't noticed the change. What about "control
panel/system/device manager/sound, video and game controllers" ? I have
"Logitech *** Devices" and "Logitech Wingman Formula Force USB" showing,
there should be no exclamation marks.

We'll have to save you from that!

Sounds to me like if your control panel icon changed, you must have updated
directx or some other software like the sound card or you child hit the
right combo of keys to delete a file related to it.

I had the same problem last week, here's the post explaining what fixed mine

<snip>
Can't help you locate a TM but I had the same problem with my LWFF after
replacing my power supply/ case......showed "not connected" in game
controllers and "?" in device mgr but was detected by the USB port, I
finally (after re-installing drivers and searching FAQ's) plugged it in the
serial port.... it was detected and worked fine, rebooted, tried the USB
port again and it worked....go figure. Might not be your problem but maybe
it will save someone a bit of lost time.

Hope it helps!

Matt I "may" have found the solution.  I was using the new drivers and
installer from the main logitech web site.
I went to wingmanteam.com and grabbed everything from there.  The
installer finally worked properly and I got the 3.62 drivers back in my
system.  However, the usb still wasn't recognized.  But I put the serial
connection on and that fired right up.  Two green lights and it worked just
fine in a quick test of F1cs2k.  I haven't gone back to usb...too
chicken...hehe but at least it's up and running again via the serial
connection. (which was a problem in itself, I couldn't even activate the
serial wheel properly until tonight..)

Well, at least you got it working Dave...
Luckily I had a computer tech buddy of mine happen to stop by last night... He
checked the ports (I had mine in the serial) and
the ports checked out fine, but the wheel wasn't communicating back to the
serial port correctly. Apparently one of the kiddies accidentally deleted some
file in the profiler or somehow corrupted the profiler. I uninstalled the
Logitech software, re-installed it, and BAY-BEE! It works fine again! However,
in my haste to get it fixed I deleted the profiler without backing up my
profiles! :(
Oh well, at least I won't be drywalling the attic space for the daughter's new
bedroom this weekend!

Hey Matt did you get your wheel back up?  Finally after struggling almost
a week, I found my answer.  I was having troubles even getting the newest
3.62 drivers to install..Logitech wrote them so they won't install if they
can't find your wheel...Even my serial port was screwed at first.  Once I
got the drivers installed, my usb was still crapped out.  But some advice
from Ian Stoffberg got me over the hump.  Go to device manager and REMOVE
the usb listings.  Reboot.  Windows will detect the usb ports, re-install
the drivers and that did it for me..the wheel did it's autocalibrate wiggle
and the 2nd led came on.
  good luck

Only the left LED means that windows doesn't recognize the wheel.

Have you tried the serial instead of USB port?

Do you have additional controller plugged in?
If so, disconnect them or/and play around with this controller ID.

Did you try a fresh install of the Logi-drivers? Make sure to search and delete
all residuals in the win-registry before.

Hope this helps
