GPL - V3 2000 better fps than TNT?

by Bill Cransto » Thu, 06 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi.  I am looking to improve my fps in GPL given my current system, a
C366 at 550mhz and a CL Riva TNT card.

I get 36fps pretty well everywhere in 640x480 with a fair bit of
detail turned off and of course the mirror refresh rate turned down.
In the middle of moving traffic however, the framerate can drop to the
mid-20s, making driving rather difficult.  I was wondering if a
V3/2000 will lead to a modest improvement in the framerate?

Also, for anyone using Windows 2000, does a V3/2000 pose any problems?
I have a dual cpu setup and GPL works great, with a 5-6 fps
improvement over Win98, but it does hang from time to time, so I use
Win98 for longer races against the AI.  I'd like to be able to turn up
some detail in Win2k if the V3/2000 works well under this OS.

Thanks,

Bill.

I'm sure a V3 2000 will give you much better framerates over a TNT.  I just
added an old Voodoo2 8MB to my brother's PII 400 (with a TNT) and he got a
noticeable increase (I would say about 3-4 fps at 800x600).  I believe the
2000 will easily overclock to the clock speeds of the 3000.  With my PII 450
and V3 3000 (not overclocked), all features on, cars-only in mirrors, detail
level set to about 15%, I can get 36 FPS just about everywhere after the
start at 1024x768.

Bill,
    I am using a PIII at 550 with a V3 3000 and get 36 fps almost everywhere
at 1024x768. At the back of a 20 car grid at Spa the framerate drops to
about 32-33 at the fall of the flag, but is back up to 36 before Eau-Rouge.
In fact, at 1280x1024, the FPS only drops to about 27-28 at flagfall in the
same conditions.
This is with the detail slider in the middle (I can't see any difference
with it any higher) all details on except drivers arms, smoke on and, most
importantly, ALL details in the mirrors.
    Go for  the Voodoo!!
                                Cheers...
                                Phillip..

Thanks guys.  Just picked up a V3/2000 PCI card today (so I can hold
onto it whenever I upgrade my AGP TNT card).  It rocks in GPL!  Full
bells and whistles at 800x600 and not a hickup anywhere.  Wow!

It even o'clocked immediately to 166mhz no probs, just like a Celeron!
<g>

Now time to see if all this card works well in Windows 2000.

Bill.
