Ok, I'm a big fan of the previous NFS games, so I had to check it out
after all the bad comments here.
The graphics are excellent as expected, I think this game will be a big
hit with the casual gamer on looks alone. Runs great at 1280x1024x32 on my
1.2 Gig Athlon, 512MB RAM, GF4 4200 128MB, SBLive. The rear view mirror is
screwy though, it's too low-res.
The car handling is definitely more NFS2/3/4 than NFS5, but that's ok
with me, it's good arcadish fun. The car handling seems a bit sluggish
though, maybe it's the way the camera moves in the 3rd person view.
The bad: The cops are weird, they often ignore drivers in front of you
and then chase you after you pass them. They also catch up to you really
fast even when you're running full blast and then they back off. Are they
using nitrous or something?? And what's up with the helicopters dropping
burning barrels on you??? I know this is an arcade game, but aside from
the car handling everything at least seems real other than the barrels.
And there's no traffic, hopefully that will be present in the retail
version.
But overall think of this game as a hot blonde with a killer body. Maybe
there's not much substance, but it sure is a fun ride. :)
You know I think you hit on something with your camera comment. I just
checked it out after I read your post and that's what was bothering me the
most about the driving. The cameras sways out to far in the turns and is way
to slow so your going straight and the camera is still catching up. I'm
really hoping that the game is polished a lot more before the release. The
game looks so good, but the control does need some help.
What controller are you using? I always find that with the NFS games I need
to tweak the deadzones on my analog controller. I set them so the car
responses with less stick movement. I have a Gravis Eliminator dual stick
gamepad. It's really fantastic for driving games because one stick is your
turning and the other is your accelerator/brake.
Happy Driving! JLc
I was using an old CH Flightstick. I normally use a little UltraRacer
PC wheel. I didn't adjust the dead zone, but now that you mention it I did
on the older NFS games.
I was enjoying the car model in the default camera view, but I normally
race in the full-screen, no car view anyway.
