Guys,

I've created engine sounds for N4 which nobody seems to know about or be
interested in, which is disappointing ;-) ... they're at

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

They're nothing special, and I don't know how realistic they are - sound is
a matter of personal taste anyway - but maybe some of you like them.

Hi Uncle Fester,

Yes, probably. My sounds are only for the engine anyway. But thanks for
having a look! :-)

Hey Achim,

I downloaded your sounds and tried them out tonight... I love 'em!!

Great job.

High quality work there, Achim.  Though with the muffled-type sound of
the engine, I think it'll be more at home on my hard drive when the N4
TPTCC patch comes out.  ;-)  Thanx for sharing!

Great sounds Achim,
I've been using your sounds for a while now and have mixed them with
mea***ers to get the best of both worlds.

Adds to the experience for me.. I always thought the standard sound was
rather anemic..just personal taste,

Do you think there's room for more deeper rumble in your sound perhaps?
(hint hint)

regards

Stu C

Hi Stu,

thanks for the comments.

Wow, you want _more_ deeper rumble? :-) Are you referring to the on-throttle
sound, or to the off-throttle sound?

The thing is, each mod has side effects (like deterioration of other
characteristics of the sound and the addition/amplification of impurities).
I've taken these sounds far really away from their original sample
(especially the off-throttle sound) and think I've pretty much used the
potential that was there. If I'd modify them more, I'd probably take away
some of the good things as well.

I'll try to tweak them some more, but don't know if I can get more out of
these wavs :-)

Achmin,
I wasn't being that serious about deeper rumble (growl) your sounds are very
good as they are.
The danger as you point out is the compromise of another effect and the main
one is the tyre skid.
That's probably the key sound in the game for obvious reasons.

I've yet to hear any game that actually really close to a true V8 but your
sound is getting close.

How does one simulate the true sound the driver hears.. with ear plugs and
tight fitting helmets etc..

It's good work that you've done and I've pointed a few others to it to try.

Regards
Stu

Hi Stu,

Phew, I'm glad to hear that <wiping sweat off of forehead> ;-)

It really isn't easy. The pure tweaking of a good sample isn't even the most
difficult part, _getting_ good samples is difficult. E.g., how to get a
static-frequency sample from a decelerating car without wind and mechanical
noise. Plus, the complexity of all the sound shades under different load
conditions. We'd need a lot more samples, and a lot more processing time to
do it properly I guess.

You could probably take a sound sample with a mini-mike even within the
driver's ear. The drawback of this is that the driver gets an intentionally
muffled, subdued sound. Simulating this would be realistic, but it lacks the
grunt, which for me, for example, is an important part of the fun.

try.

Thanks. I didn't originally create them for publication. AAMOF, I was
reluctant to release them. But now that I've released them, I'd be glad if a
couple of guys like them :-)
