N4 Engine Sound Problems PLEASE HELP!!!

by Peter Hoope » Thu, 26 Jul 2001 07:59:11

Hi all,

Well, having struggled for the last few weeks to get my new setup
working successfully with N4 I finally gave up the ghost tonight and
pulled the SBLive out of the box and went back to the OnBoard sound
system. Now I have a new problem :O(

The engine sounds in N4 don't play right... they just sound like a
scraping \ screeching noise. The gear changes, sound effects
(crashes, etc.) and spotter voice all sound fine it just appears to be
the engine sounds that are screwed.

I checked GPL and that seems fine.

Anyone have any clue what the problem could be.

AMD Athlon 1.2, 512MB, V5 5500 64MB, VIA AC'97 onboard audio.

I am really gutted that I could not get the SBLive working in this rig
but am even more frustrated now that the onboard stuff has a problem
as well.... I just want to run N4 for a while without having to worry
about it locking up!!! I managed to get enough time in over the
weekend between freezes to get myself entered on N4Rank but am now
struggling to get any time at all. Just no way I can run with the
horrible scratching engine noises I get at the moment.

TIA

PH

well, sometimes on my machine with a fortissimo board from hercules
(guillemot) the engine sound just goes away, all the other sounds (other
engines, wind, gears, radio...) are there, but my engine is gone....only in
this game of course, GPL, F1RC, MM2, MBTR...are all okay

I had similare problems a few weeks ago, but then a nice chap called "Remco
R" came to my rescue...  Here's what he wrote;
(I had to do a little re-writing... removed some links ti MSI files etc. ) :

---
I got a MSI K7T-Turbo mobo with a SB live working fine after a long
battle :-(

These are the steps u should follow to get it right :

- Flash the bios to the latest version... Goto you motherboard
manufactureres site to find the latest  official version.  (I
*****think***** this is the correct site:
http://www.chaintech.com.tw/BIOS/BIOSUPD8.htm

This takes care of the incompatibility issues of the Via kt133a chipset,
686b southbridge with the SB live, i.e. data corruption.
read more here : http://www.viahardware.com/686bfaq.shtm#_Toc518065962

- Disable in bios :
onchip sound, legacy sb
enable memory by SPD
if u dont use both (via) IDE channels, disable them as well ( or the one
u don't use) this frees IRQ 14 and/or 15, which will be taken by the
Promise raid controller.

- I've the sb card in PCI slot 4, arrange your cards so that it's irq is
not shared with other devices. ( preferably it should have IRQ 5)

- Install the latest Via 4in1 driverset :
http://download.viahardware.com/4in1432v.zip

- I use the default WindowsME and Windows2000 (dualboot) Soundblaster
Live drivers, especially in Win2k i had stuttering/crackling sound with
the Creative drivers.

- Another tweak to enable 4-way interleaving for your memory
http://www.viahardware.com/download/george/MemoryEnable.zip
Should give a little boost in memory speed.

- Enable EAX in N4 and enjoy the most richest sound youl'le heard in a
racing sim :-)

Hope this helps a bit,

Ciao,
      Remco.

---

FYI, I use Win98SE and I did install the latest drivers + Live!Ware
3.0 and it also works ...

Hope this helps!

Many thanks ED,

I will give this a go tonight (although a bit nervous about this
flashing the BIOS malarky :O\ )

The onboard sounds are pretty horrible outside of the sim anyway...
way more crackly than anything I have heard before.

Thanks again.
