Should you be able to go into replay mode after a race and look at the
action? I can only seem to see the last lap or so. I have 64MB of memory...
is this the problem?

Replay size is based on the duration of the race and how many opponents
you are racing against.  The more opponents, the less replay you'll get.
Also, shut down any unneccesary applications that might be running.
These apps steal available memory from the replay buffer.

Because VROC runs through the Nutscrape browser, a lot of memory is
unavailable to GPL's replay buffer.  VROC would be better if it didn't
rely on a browser/the web for it's very life.  Of course, that would
present a whole new batch of issues for the VROC programming team...

GPL replay after a race

While I agree with you that Netscape and IE4 are bloated overfeatured
products, the reason that replays are so short is actually set that way
internally in GPL and it seems they might have been a bit overcautious
in how much memory they allow GPL to use for replays, but thanks to Papyrus
you can change these settings to allow far more replay memory, a setting of
16000 (16 megs as opposed to the default of 2 megs default memory that GPL
uses for replays on a 64 meg machine) worked fine for me until I upgraded
to 128 megs, your results may vary this was posted by Papyrus's Randy Cassidy

Hope that helps, and thanks to Randy for having posted this info.

Seeyas on the track.

I have 128mb of memory and can't get a complete replay of a long race at
the 'Ring (5 laps) with only 5 or 6 if I host thru VROC.  Offline, I can
have 19 drivers and only miss the first 1.5 laps - online, with 5-7
drivers, I miss getting most of the first lap.

What setting are you using now?  I am going to try this with 24576
(24mb) and see what happens.

GPL replay after a race

Hi John,

With 128 megs you are going to want to use a setting higher than 24 megs,
with 128 megs and no setting in core.ini it looks like GPL defaults to
around 32 megs of replay buffer since that has been the size of the replay
file when it actually wasn't long enough to hold an entire race. I hosted
a Spa online league race of 13 laps with about 12 drivers and I missed the
first lap on the replay.

So I am going to be increasing the size too.

Check out the following article posted here a few months back, it seems
to suggest that you can even use a setting of 96000 96megs to record
super huge replays this person says this gave him 3 hours with 20 cars:
http://x10.dejanews.com/getdoc.xp?AN=403619813&threaded=1&CONTEXT=915...
6654538&hitnum=3

I will probably be trying a setting of 48000 or maybe 64000 this should be
a nice improvement for us users with 128meg ram over the default of around
30-32 megs.

I only worry about this because I also host league races and need to have
a full replay of the entire race for incident reports and race recaps.

Let me know how it works out for you.

If you turn of dust, dirt and smoke, and maybe skidmarks, you can save
significantly more laps. The savings may be over 30%. Or have you turned
them off already?

I increased my replay buffer to 48mb (I have 128mb RAM), loaded up
netscape, and ran an intermediate long race offline at nurburgring with
19 AI cars.  It saved all of the race.  I have almost everything turned
on and am running at full detail.

Everything appears to be fine.

GPL replay after a race

Thanks Bart, yeah I already have those turned off, I started hosting
VROC back when I ran a Celeron266 at 412mhz and never had those features on to
keep the FPS up when hosting, now that I upgraded to a Celeron300a at 464mhz
I could turn on the extra eye candy but find those extra features
disconcerting after racing GPL for so long without them :-)

Good tip though thanks. Spa just seems to be a track in particular that takes
up alot of replay, I bet Nurburgring will too later in the season when
the IGPLC does the race there. The other tracks so far had no problem
catching the whole race + a few practice laps left on the replay at the
default size for 128meg ram machine.

Seeyas on the track.

With 128mb the longest reply I have saved, so far, is 1 hour and 7
mins.  That was a Long race at Rouen with 5 drivers and I got the race
and most of the practice in the replay.  I haven't changed any
settings for memory usage.

Spa seems to be one of the bigest track to record :)
I have launch a race with all AI cars/full race in witch i never
drive.
The total lenght of the replay was 72 meg.
I ahve the eye candy features on but the AI don't produce much smoke
isn't it? :)
If i had driven myself in the race space would have been lot bigger :)
My replay size is set at 80 meg for the moment....
I was thinking about restarting a season and record every race for
future watching (on cdr for ex :)

I ahve always wish the papy cup races replay would be posted !!
(Maybe as an "fill-up" in a future GPL-Adon cd hehe

GPL bases its replay buffer size on the amount of physical (semiconductor)
memory in the system, not the amount of "free" memory, or available swap
space.  The shorter on-line replay is most likely due to the excessive
number of skids laid down by warping cars.  Either turning off skids, or
overriding GPL's replay buffer size should give you longer replays.
