GPL performance on my puter?

by Matthew Birger Knutse » Sat, 15 May 1999 04:00:00

I am not sure I am getting the optimum out of my computer setup - I'm a
bit disappointed, because I used to have a V1 MB card, and upgraded to
a 16MB Diamond Monster Fusion Banshee a while ago - so I wondered if
there are any gurus out there w/regards to BIOS setups etc.
What I am experiencing:
I am running GPL at 800x600, to get rid of the texture probs, I am using
3dfx generic old drivers, with the Banshee Fix patch. Frame rate is ok,
I guess, but jumps a bit between 30-37, and sometimes, the scenery seems
to be going at a very choppy rate. I just didn't see the major
improvement I expected after upgrading...so I suspect something
basically wrong in my setup

My system is:
PII 333, the mentioned Banshee Card (PCI), 128MB SDRAM. My sound card is
an awe 64 value.

Any hints & tips are welcome! :-)

Thats about right. GPL is cpu intensive. On my system (300a/450) I get the
same as you at 338 but it goes a bit better at 374 and flys at 450. See if
you can overclock, or consider a faster cpu, the banshee is good but there
is room for improvement there too.

GPL performance on my puter?

by Jason Mond » Sat, 15 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi Matthew,

I have a P2/333, 64mb, V2 12mb, SBAWE64.  Try reducing the graphics a bit.
The 333 is too slow to render everything GPL has to offer.

My config:

* All textures in front
* No textures in mirrors
* Turn off dynamic lighting and spectular highlights.
* Turn off dirt, dust and skids
* Set detail bias slide full left for 0%
* Set resolution to 800x600 (I have a V2 12mb card and 800 is as fast as
640)
* Set mirrors to cars only
* Set objects to ALL.

I get 36 fps everywhere, even on the grid.  It just drops down to 34 or so
at the hairpin at Rouen and such.

It may look bad, but FPS count in GPL.  I turn everything back on when
viewing replays.

Jason.

I think that the Banshee maxes out at around 36 fps, I get 36 fps with

difference using higher or lower sensitivity. Irun more or les at 36 fps
all the time with all the detail on
