GPL Choppy Performance Problem

I love this GPL demo, but the frame rates are irritating me.  I have run
it both with my
Stealth II and with my CL V2 Blaster.  Admittedly, they claim it isn't
optimized for Voodoo2
yet, but the Stealth II actually seems to run it a little smoother.  But
personally, unlike others
who've tried it both ways, I like the Voodoo version's appearance more;
the Rendition version
looks too dark for one thing.

think that
with this and either of my 3D cards I could get this to run smoother.
Like I said, the Rend version
runs slightly smoother but I don't like the way it looks - AND it
doesn't completely eliminate this problem.  The Voodoo version runs the
same in
all resolutions, so I'm running it at 800x600.  It is smooth MOST of the
time, but especially
at the start of the race and around some corners, it gets pretty
herky-jerky.  I don't know exactly
what the problem is but it doesn't seem it should be like this.
I have everything turned on and the details switch in the middle.
It doesn't seem as if I should have to turn any of the details down
just to get rid of this choppiness - I don't have to in other games.
Maybe this is just because of it being an early release and the final
sim will have improved framerates?  I hope so, but I've noticed others
with similar or lesser systems saying that theirs is running as smooth
as can be!  (Although what they think is smooth may be different from
my perception also.)  All of my other sims and games run at stellar
frame rates on this system - I'm not having any of these choppy
hesitations
with any other program.

Strange because on my P200 (non-MMX) with Stealth II or Voodoo 1 card I get
fairly decent frame rates at 800x600 and it is never herky jerky. And that
is with all details on. To get optimum frame rate I turn everything off in
the mirrors and turn detqil level down to minimum and track objects at many.

Thanks
