ICR2:1.2 patch questions,observations

by William Dahm » Sat, 21 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I just installed the 1.2 patch to ICR2 and I noticed some things that
may or may no be the case

The game seems much easier, and I did quite well with the FAST setups
without having to change them around like I did before.  Phx was esp.
easy compared to before.  I also noticed I didn't need to change the
anti-roll bars nearly as often, the car handling seemed to stay just
fine where as before I had to adjust them after a loss of 5 gal on some
tracks.
I just went from Realistic damage to arcade, maybe that has something
to do with this but I don't think so.
Ok please go ahead and post your responses.

Overall, I agree with you  on the patch. The only problems I
encountered were at Michigan.  Before the patch, I could run flat-out
through the turns with full tanks. After applying the patch, I would
have to lift going into Turn 1 or the RR tire will instantly overheat
and the rear end would break loose. Needless to say you cannot compete
with the AI cars when you have to lift through a turn at Michigan.
Something appears to be wrong with the updated Michigan files.

The biggest thing that I noticed with the 1.0.2 DOS patch was that
the car wasn't as touchy and you could actually "save" the car.  In
1.0.0, it seemed like if the car broke loose, it was gone, don't even
bother trying to recover control.  In 1.0.2 it's a touch more gradual
and you can actual *ride* the "edge of control" (if you're driving
well) instead of tumbling irrevocably over the edge.  Makes the sim a
lot more fun!

Question:  Are you still using the pre-patch setup?  It may be that you
need to tailor the setup for the "real" traction of the track and not
the way it worked pre-patch.  Just curious...

Well, If you get a chance, check out the next Michigan 500.  You'll find
they don't go flat out around Michigan.  Watch some of the incar camera
shots and listen to the motor.  You'll see you "have" to lift in ICR2  in
the same places the real drivers lift in Cart races.
Dave Henrie
(Laguna Seca convinced, me.  In ICR1  I could pretty much accelerate
allllll the way up the hill.  But in #2 Ihad to lift AND downshift.  Then
I caught the last race of the season and there was Mike Andretti, lifting
and downshifting TWICE at the exact same spot I did.--now I just have to
figure out why the rest of my lap doesn't measure up to Mike's:)  )

I tried just about everything to get that car's rear  to stick in the
turns but coundn't find anything that works.  No matter what I tried
the right rear would heat up and swap ends.  Please understand that I
have  had extensive race car peparation experience as Crew Chief for a
Pro Super-Vee team in the past so I kinda know what should and
shouldn't work,,,,If you have any workable full-tank setups for
Michigan, I'd appreciate it if you would e-mail them to me and I'll
try it..

I'm not sure if they actually lift the throttle or the engine is
slowed down by the cornering forces...Do the RPM's drop before
enterring the turn (lifting) or during the turn (cornering forces)?

As far as downshifting on a road course, the shift points are a
function of gear ratios and exit speed of the previous corner.
If you carry more speed through a turn you may run out of rev's and
need to shift sooner than if exited the corner slower and were not as
fast down the straight. Conversely, you may need to downshift at
different points (or not at all) entering a turn depending on your
approach speed. Since Michael is lapping quicker than you, its a
reasonable assumption that he has higher straightline speed and
depending on his gearing, needs to double-downshift to be in the right
gear for that section of track.

<<A little off the subject- is it still possible to send in the
original CD to Papy and get the Win95 one? Is it worth it to?>>

Not when you can download the patch off Sierra's website! If you
ask me, however, the Win95 version is fairly lame. The sound is awful
and the graphics aren't much different.
OTOH, if you want to see what the game should look like, get an
Intergraph Reactor, which comes bundled with a Rendition-ready full
version of IndyCarII (for DOS). It's simply beautiful...

I have the same problem with Michigan with the Rendition version.  I also
had a well known young talented current indycar driver in my Hyper
Stimulator who also said the handling is not correct at all.
