I'm looking for a racing sim that looks and drives as good as F1 2002, but
doesn't require me to be a structural engineer to set up the cars. In other
words something I can jump right into. I know I can dumb down the settings
on F1 but that seems like cheating.

Have you tried Need For Speed "Porsche Unleashed"?  Not really a sim, but quite
fun and you can jump right in.

I agree.  I think NFS:PU is as close to a sim as any NFS title and it's alot
of fun.

yep its a great lets "drink some beers and race" game. You still need some
skill to drive it, but is also alot of fun watching people crash it when
they got a good beer buzz going.  :)  Not to mention you should beable to
pick it up pretty cheap now. Probably around $15 as a EA classic.  I'd like
to see the new Hot Pursuit 2 have the same level of physics. That would be
blast getting drunk and running from the cops. Now that is a real simulator!

Yep, also agree, exept you will need to do setups, once you move on in the
evolution mode, but just ask Jeff Reid on the need-for-speed NG, oh and
racing online is ok too, if that is a reason to getting a game, and in the
online racing there are gamerooms where no mods or setups are allowed so in
that sense you can just jump in and drive

I'll third that one. Actually, as much as I like true simulations, the
mission based levels of Porsche Unleashed kept me coming back over and
over. The driving model is pretty convincing, with the rear engined
911's wild oversteer there to spite you the second you're not paying
attention. The damage model is very forgiving, which really is the
only "arcadey" think about it.
The graphics still look super, and the way the cars move in the
replays is spot on.

My second fun pick would be Colin McRae Rally 2.
Lots of fun with a driving model convincing enough to be immersive.

<raises eyebrows> not saying it's not a good suggestion in the "fun"
category, but in what way is CMR2 convincing as a rally simulation?

Super 1 Karting gets my vote. For a budget title, it was surprisingly nice.

The cars slide nice, and behave believably. CMR2's main problem is the
short stages, but thats also one of the things that makes it very
approachable.

Get yourself a copy of TOCA2 for some great racing fun.
Also get CMR2 while you're at it.
