Voodoo2 vs. Banshee

Voodoo2 vs. Banshee

I would like to buy a 3dfx graphics accelerator (for OF1R).
Is there a difference in speed (fps) between the Voodoo2 accelerator and
the Voodoo Banshee graphics board (they cost about the same)? Is it also
possible to use two Banshee boards to improve speed?

Not really.  Banshee may be slightly quicker in non multi-texture'd apps
than the Voodoo2.  And no, you can't use two Banshee boards to improve
speeds.  If you want a faster Voodoo board, then get a Vooodoo3 2000 or 3000
which should be a bit more than a Banshee but less than 2 Voodoo2s.

I've had both, a V2 (Maxigamer) and a Banshee (Creative), in my current
machine, a        PII400.  I prefer the Banshee over the V2, the 2D
performance is greatly improved and the Banshee allows me to run at a higher
resolution in GPL and still hold a constant 36fps. However, if I was buying
today, I would spring for the Voodoo3.

One thing to keep in mind, if you do decide to get V2 or Banshee,
rather than going for a Voodoo3 card, V2 is a 3d only card, while
Banshee is 2d/3d card.  BTW, if you live in the US, there's now a $30
rebate from 3dfx for V2 1000 card purchased in US.  You can check out
3dfx website for more detail.

I use a Monster Fusion 16Mb. It is a Banshee overclocked slightly. Runs faster than Creative's.
Gives great performance, and costs about $70 CDN.

If you can afford it though, go for a newer card. I'm torn between beautiful TNT2 and V3500.
The V3000+ series is faster. I have heard of issues with them though.

The $30 rebate applies to all Voodoo3 cards and is only available til the
18th of this month.

Depends on what you are after.  Overall they are generally faster in GPL.
Otherwise, they are not necessarily faster.

Er, Chris, 3dfx has another rebate recently for V2 1000.  That's
Voodoo2.  The offer ends at the end of this year, I believe.  Guess
they're trying to unload all 'em V2 now.
