Modem Player probs

Modem Player probs

by John Simmo » Mon, 06 May 1996 04:00:00

My brother has an AST Advantage 486 with an internal 14.4 modem.  I have a USR
28.8 external.

We can't seem to get a connect.  His modem dials, the connection is
negotiated, and then  we both get a "14400 connect" message, but then a
message box comes up saying "waiting for remote player".  Nothing happens, and
eventually we lose the connection. His init string is currently ATZ^M.

I know our modems will talk to each other because we just played an hour or so
of Descent 2.  Can anybody help out here?

Many thanks in advance.

First off, try setting the connect speeds for both modems to 9600.  I have not been
able to detect a difference between 19.2 and 9600.  The Latency is the most important
spec for a connection, not the baud rate.

Secondly, both modems need to have Error Detection, Error Correction, and Data
Compression turned off to get Nascar to Connect.  For the US Robotics modem, I would
recommend using the following init string: at&f^m~~~at&c1&d2&k0&m0&n6&a0^m  For the AST
modem, you will need to construct a init string manually.  Look in the owners manual to
see what settings are used to turn off these three features.

I had a similar problem...then we fixed it. We both are using the at&f string
and both using 19200 as baud rate...my modem is a Suprefaxmodem 14400i and his
is an Us Robotics (dont know hte model...) try it, it might work

Also if anyones live in the 819 area code let me know, we could race with any
sims...

see you

Daniel
