OT? ADSL modems

Getting the BT line in my house turned on in the next few days - and
probably going to be using Plusnet as my ADSL provider ( any better ***
ISP suggestions)

I'd rather go for an internal PCI ADSL modem as frakly - I done want ANOTHER
damn cable lying round the back of my pc.

But if a USB one would be in any way better - I'll go for one.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

I would stay away from USB-ones. Internal card sounds ok, but the best one
would to
be having a ethernet-box for your adsl.

I was thinking of switching to Nildram.co.uk as they are the ISP behind
jolt.co.uk, so they are fairly *** based.  But, BT has come on leaps and
bounds lately and I am happy to stay where I am in the meantime.

Have you thought about getting a router?  I got one from dabs.com for about
70.  It makes life easy if you have more than 1 PC.  You can either get a 1
port version and a seperate hub or a 4 port version (about 10 dearer).  The
only problem it has is that assigning forwarding ports is a pain and it
limits you to 20 ports (VERY RESTRICTIVE).  Hopefully they will address this
in a new firmware upgrade.

All the best,
Ash

PS. hows that radical coming along

For now it'll be 99% just 1 pc using it - and I can what ICS on when the
other machine down my network needs it!

Dont ask - dipping into it from time to time - but CHRIST I'm having wierd
trouble with patches making some faces kinked etc

This particular router can be used as either USB or a "proper" router, so it
could make it future proof.  But your right, if your not ever going to use
it, simple ICS should do the trick.

Yeah, my girlfriend is having similar problems with her TT - a few creases
when welding, but she is only learning :)

Good Luck

Its a pretty impressive model for her first go, I'll show a few pictures
when it is "finished" (they are never finished are they!!).

I'm with Nildram, Ash.
Solid as a rock for me. Yeah they are a couple of quid a month more than
BT et al but their customer service is excellent and I've had no
problems at all. Pings to the UKGPL servers are always under 45.

Kev

BTW I've got one of those standard BT alcatel USB green squid modem
things. No probs at all.

Agreed. You can then have it behind one of the inexpensive firewall/routers
and
share the connection also. ISC - yes it will work but I'd much rather be on
a separate
network - my machine off of the 'Net'.

(I know the inexpensive NAT devices technically aren't considered a firewall
but
they do a pretty good job for home broadband use.)

www.dslwarehouse.co.uk  I got a creative internal PCI modem and it works
great, uses about 3% of CPU time on a slow CPU, doesn't even use 1% on my
1.4ghz Athlon...

I use Pipex for my provider, fast, 576 down, 288 up... regularly getting
downloads of 75k/s and uploading at an average of 30k/s.

Can't argue for 24 a month, especially as ISP's like freeserve are lowering
bandwidth on 56k modems, to try to get people to move over onto broadband...
they convinced me to, so I did, just not with them  :o)

The best ones are Ethernet based... IMHO.
