OT - ADSL in theUK, help

I've just found out I am in one of the ADSL areas now, but I'm not sure what
to go for. Its between BT and Homechoice. BT is more expensive but is
500kps, Homechoice is cheaper (half price) but only 115kps. Is there anyone
out there with the homechoice option. Is it any good? Right now I have a
normal modem, never connecting at more that 40kps. Will 115 be enough to
play online GPL etc? What are download speeds like (ie how long would it
take to download a 100mb demo).
Basically I'd appreciate some impartial advice. THanks in advance.

ps just for the americans out there, ADSL is only just kicking off in the UK
and the BT option is 40 a month!!!

You may want to post questions regarding ADSL to this newsgroup also.....
uk.telecom.broadband

and a list of providers in addition to BT

I'd say nither BT Openworlds service is ***on every level, about 1 in 5
emails take 12-24 houres to get to me the news server is ***the suport is
crap, the usb modem is ***(it aparently draws more than the usb
spesification power and some mobos cant handel that) the service goes down
for a whole night about once a fortnight.

Go for Clara nets ADSL service it may be more expensive than BT's subsidised
service (sombody complaind to Oftel about the service and was referd back to
BT when BT Openworld is ment to be a seperate company because of compatition
laws that are ment to be enforced by Oftel LOL) but you will get a better
service.

A 30kps connection is fine for playing GPL online.  I think it's more
important to have fast pings and reliability for online *** (as a client,
not a server), not high bandwidth.  I'm assuming you just want to join races
and not host them of course.

I have been with BT Openworld since October and have had very few
problems with it. I have only had a few times when the service has
been down in that time and each of those lasted for no more than a
couple of hours or so.

I don't use their newservers except to keep up with the BT Broadband
ng's and although there have been the occasional e-mail delays it
certainly hasn't been anywhere near the level you have noted.

There are certainly people who have had many problems but I can only
speak of my own and my friends experience with BTO and although at 40
quid it is very pricey I certainly couldn't go back to a normal modem
connection now.

One of the problems is that you generally only hear the bad stories
about this type of service and those people who are happy with the
service have no reason to post about it.

Online with both GPL and N4 has been hassle free up to this point.

Have you noticed whether having ADSL has improved ping times at all on Vroc
(or any other online ***)?

Yes it has made a significant improvement. Whereas before ADSL my
pings were very rarely below 200-300 and quite often were even higher
I now find that they are as low as the 30's on some servers.
