I like using buttons 5 and 8 on my wheel to shift. It seems we are limited
to 1, 2, 3 and 4 in GP3. Is there a way to use the other buttons?

You can use the RBjoys program from http://www.rbsoft.de to map your
shifter buttons

It works great on my R4

Dunno what wheel you've got but you can choose the keyboard shift & space as
gear selectors and then just program them into your wheel shifters. Anyway
it works for the MS FF wheel.

Thanks. I've got it, but I'm pretty confused on how to get it to work
though.

I've been puzzling around for  while too.
Read the instructions (also on Ralf's wesite) and follow it step by step.
It works for my Thrustmaster Formula Force GT
