NASCAR 2 - use it in Win95 or DOS???

by John D. Courtn » Wed, 11 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Hi,
I'am hoping to get Nascar 2 real soon, and was wondering if
someone could answer this question for me.  When I get NASCAR 2,
should I run it in DOS or Win95?  I have a P120, 16 mg RAM.  Is there
any framerate advantage (ect) to running it in DOS instead of Win95?

Replies would be greatly appreciated,
John

I booted to DOS 6.22 and installed mine from the DOS prompt (not a DOS box
under win95).  It runs under win95 with no probs at all, except for the widely
experienced Kali95 problem.  I can run any of the supplied batch files with
impunity.

Some folks have claimed that using the win95 installer wipes out Internet
Explorer 3.0.

I notice in W95 that there is a slight pause that occurs while you
race.  It's only a fraction of a second,  and happens about every
10 secs.  After awhile you really don't notice it.  I have a 2mb
video board (s3 chipset), p133 16 ram.

Run it in anymode you like, but install it from DOS!

Yep, runs ok from either, but I prefer running from Win95.  And yes, the
Kali / Rendition problem is a serious pain.

It's not really accurate to say it's a Kali/Rendition problem.  That
would imply that it is limited to the Rendition cards, and I've seen
reports of it happening with other cards.  Admittedly it does seem to
be unavoidable with this combination however.

I don't use MS Explorer, but I can tell you that the windows install
version will stick your program in a \sierra\nascar2 directory.  And
in the Sierra directory with be about a half meg of wasted sierra
setup files.

Installing from dos lets you install at whatever you want, like
c:\nascar2, and does NOT install the sierra directory or unwanted
useless files.

(I'm sure someone will tell me that they ARE useful... ;)

Fair?  I have to be fair?  Now you tell me!  Ok, will try for fair....
When playing Nascar 1 over Kali with my S3 864 PCI card with 2 megs, I was
able to run Nascar, and return to Kali without any problems.  After
installing the Intergraph Reactor, this is no longer possible.  So, out of
the two cards I have attempted to run Kali and any DOS program with, the
Reactor is the only one to lock up the system.  And with my 5x86 133  with
a 1 meg Hercules Stingray VLB, Kali gets along fine with DOS apps.

So,  while I am not saying that the Reactor is the only card that Kali
doesn't like, I am saying that it is the only card _ I _ have that Kali
doesn't like.  Fair enough?

But, if it comes to a choice between the two, Kali is toast, at least on my
Reactor machine.

About the Reactor cards in general.

They're obviously nice when they work properly.

But here's a current list of little things you currently have to deal
with.

1. Indy Car2 has to be run in Dos-Mode. Which makes networking through
'95 out.

2. Scortched Planet is in the same boat as IC2.

3. Nascar 2. Has a lock problem through Kali.

The rest of the available software seems to work without a hitch.

Well, it does WORK, you just have to re-boot when you exit the game.

I've gone back to DOS Kali for Nascar anyway.  It runs faster, and I
don't have to pay homage to Gates every time I exit a ***y game <g>.

True, but it still has to have the leading Sierra directory.

QAZ REPLY:

Well that's funny I erased Sierra and now my directory looks like this.

Nascar2\nascar\

Again just for the record, not a big deal.

Is there a chance this could cause a joystick not to work???

yes and no. you can put it anywhere, but it will still be
\sierra\nascar2 no matter where you put it. (example, installing to
d:\nascar2, will make it d:\nascar2\sierra\nascar2

Which is to say it works, but not correctly.  I don't mind having to reboot
as much as I mind having to relog on to my provider.  They only have so
many lines, and it gets busy at times.

Good one    :)   Do you use standalone DOS or the Win95 reboot?
