>Can't anybody do something to stop it?

Maybe a company with the balls to start writing for DOS again, or at
least make a DOS game that will run under Win95 for the drones that
can't figure out how to Restart In MSDOS Mode.

So far the best looking, fastest titles I have seen are DOS games/sims
with native 3D support.

Somebody in the industry has to realize that Win95 has done nothing
for *** except triple minimum system requirements...

I realize developers like Win95 because they don't have to worry about
device drivers, but it seems like they have to deal with a lot of
other hassles for that convenience.

Thanks for a most righteous post!

And then what happens? People who bought pre-configured systems can't
play the games, because they're not competent to setup their machine,
so they bought one, and the company they bought from didn't set it up
for them.

So, they call tech support (costing $$$) and then return the game
(costing $$$), because it's obvious to them that game DOS-XYZ is a
"piece of crap" that won't run on their system. And THEY KNOW their
system is configured right because MineSweeper (or other Win95) game
works "just fine".

Can't tell you how many times I've read that (almost word-for-word)
complaint about a DOS game.

So, the profitable solution for game companies is to write games that
the masses can play on their computer as it ships from PB, GW2000,
Dell, etc.

Because, in the (paraphrased) words of an esteemed colleague, "writing
a game for Direct X is like running a 100 yard dash with an elephant
crammed up your backside."

More than a few. But people are unwilling to learn about setting up
for DOS ***, and unwilling to pay someone else to do it.

Many developers of real-time, 3D games DON'T like Win95. But there's
no financially viable alternative.

since it skirts the 3D issue.

I've been stuck with an ATI 3dxpression that won't run the D3d version
of Formula One by Psygnosis(doesn't answer tech support emails) or the
I76 D3D patch without graphics problems, and couldn't run the demo of
JEDI KNIGHT but when I installed the full game I found one of the most
professional, best looking, easy configuring, hard game playing D3D sims
(using 'sims' very loosely) that I've ever seen.  Sorry for the runon
sentence, but I'm e***d about the possibilities of competent game
makers with direct 3d and reported performance of such video cards as
StealthII under D3D.

I like CART World Series, too, but its apples and oranges.  The one area where
I feel CWS beats CPR thus far is AI.  They are ***ously aggressive in
trying to get around you in CWS, and in CPR, well lets just say Bob Varsha has
told me stuff about the effect of a lack of wings on an Indy Car I'd rather
 not know <G>

Also, the tracks in CWS are just not accurate, specifically Laguna Seca, which
is much wider and much longer.  Its not possible to get under 1:15 there, yet
 the AI drivers do anyway.

I wondered myself. But one of the nice things about Usenet is that you
never really have to know; a "grammar free" zone!
