There's this new combat flight sim called IL2 Sturmovik
(http://www.racesimcentral.net/). I was looking around in the newsgroup
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight.sim, and it's a hot item there. In fact, the
way it's being discussed instantly reminded me of the GPL threads I've seen
in rec.autos.simulators. As it seems, the planes in IL2 are too difficult
too handle for a lot of people, but the *** sim-lovers are ecstatic
about the sheer realism. So... if this appeals to you, you might want to
check it out.

Loved the demo and can't wait for the full game.
Only one MAJOR big grip:
No dynamic campaign :(((((

Andre, I have a question for you and it's really stupid...

In the demo I've flown the me109 tons, but it's a *** trying to shoot
anything down. I have no clue where to aim, there's no mark for where the
gun *might* fire and therefore I can never seem to hit the enemy plane even
if im following it nicely 0.1 of a mile from it. I usually end up flying
around, trying to shoot them, and then the Ju's do they're bombing thing and
then I follow them home and (hopefully) land. I've also had some interesting
where I've escaped too :) Just a few minutes ago I braked too hard as I
touched the ground, flipped over, then ejected, so my pilot ran out of the
plane, pretty cool...

Thanks,
Alex

You best bet would be to ask your questions on
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim, that's the place where the real
flight-sim experts are.. I didn't fly the ME109 that much, I prefer
the other side :) but if I remember correctly you have to trim the
aiming with shift-f1, the standard aiming is quite off, making hitting
something very hard indeed..
I must say I like this realism factor, it's very hard to shoot a
plane.. unlike all the other flightsims where you go home with 10
kills in one mission, here you should be happy if you get home with
1-2 kills, much more realistic numbers..

And yes, those details like the pilot running away and ducking when
the plane explodes is SO cool :))

Just looking over the control setup menu gave me a headache.  Seemed
like a fun challenging sim like GPL with a steep learning curve. Two
questions. Is there a replay mode and there anyway to advance time in
mission to eliminate flying to target ?  ( i'm getting bored shooting
down my own men)

I have never had much luck with those dloader agents.  Recently I tried
the demo for Empire Earth(Age of Empires clone) and it had this fancy agent.
7,000 attempts later only about 4 megs of 100+ were dloaded so I found a
mirror site and grabbed the whole thing in about 5 minutes.  What most
agents really are is...a spot to sell more advertising....and a probably to
grab some user info in the process.(I am guessing about the second part but
I wouldn't be suprised)

I'm pretty sure I saw those options (played the demo briefly yesterday). But
for more information, I should probably refer you to
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim.

Thanks, anyway, right after you posted this I flew that escort mission and
got my first kill! I then landed successfully too! Whoohoo! Gotta get this
sim :)

Thanks,
Alex

Yes, there is a replay mode, although it doens't always represent what
actully happened. And yes, you can advance/reduce time with [ and ].

Are you saying the replay mode is actually an "historical
reenactment"?

I was suspicious of it too.  So, I didn't bother.  When I find a site where I
can download without all the BS then I'll do it.  In the meantime, they lost
the chance to impress me with the demo...

No, you can save a track file of what you just played, but it doesn't play
it back accurately.
