I would ask to join, but my abilities with a stock car suggest I would be parked
wondering why the track was so short but incredibly wide. Probably at T4 on the
last lap for the leaders.

I'll be there and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be there too
Tony. It's all for fun, and more than a few of us are new to this stock car
racing too.

Hi Tony,

I don't want to sound patronizing, apologies if I do, but I _much_ prefer
intelligent opponents over 'fast' ones.

It's far more fun having to properly prepare for lapping someone than
getting crashed out by some hysterical crashkid who just can't stand the
fact that someone else might be faster than himself and he might actually
have to yield for once in his life.

Lapping is part of the racing, and is also a tactical or strategic issue -
approaching the lapped car, waiting for signals or mistakes, trying to read
his actions, giving him the right signals through the driving, understanding
what he is doing and then making the pass in the right moment, properly
using the options that offer itself, etc.

It's not as exciting as an outright top-of-your lungs fight for a position
with a top driver with side-by-side battles and all the giving, taking,
prevailing and yielding such a battle involves, but it is part of the racing
fun if the lapped car behaves realistically, and not like a spoiled ignorant
adolescent :-)

Thanks David, and Joachim.

However, I am the kind of driver that if my wheel needs calibrating and isn't
straight I pronounce it undriveable and rush off to re-calibrate. So I am
finding turning right down the straights quite a learning experience. Add to
that the "sloppy" steering response and exiting onto the straights seem a bigger
challenge than corners. I seem ok out of traffic, but quite often get into a
"wobble" side by side with traffic.

The most amusing is when "in the middle three wide" I create my own version of
Nascar Pinball.

Maybe I will practice a bit more :-)

Don't know if it will be of any help, but until I tinkered with the
linear/non-linear setting, the car seemed very wobbly and difficult to hold
a line. Switching to 100% linear with my Ferrari wheel made a huge
difference.

Hey Tony,

it's indeed better for you to stay home if you intend to turn right at Dover
or Phoenix <beg>  but if that was just a momentary lapse of reason, then
just jump onto the track with us! :-)

Including myself... in all probability I won't show better than Dave
(Henrie) would have. I was just fooling around in my reply to him.

Don't let inexperience with stock cars put you off Tony... I can attest
you're more than good enough to join. I can also attest the bunch racing
these events are very clean racers, even in a lapping situation.

Besides, these stock cars are pretty strong and don't flip *that* easily.
;-)

PS.: for those not in the MARA-E league, the inside joke is I collected Tony
in The Loop (at Watkins Glen) in Wednesday's event as he attempted to
recover from something on the last lap. One of those limited
viewpoint/latency online deals.

Thanks David, I will give it a go. I even find myself apologising to the AI at
the moment...

When I said turning right down the straights I meant...

For those wishing to read between the lines of Jan's polite response, substitute
"recover from something" to "driving out of the hay bales"  and "limited
viewpoint/latency online deals" with "driving out of the hay bales in an FD just
as the second placed F1 is about to lap you deals" :-)
