If the purpose of making the CART Precision Racing demo available is
to prime the pump for retail sales later this month it has failed
miserably.
First of all, I can't even get the demo to run (that is, actually
allow me to race) on my 5x86-133 with 64 megs of RAM and a Mystique 2
meg video card. It won't even run at the lowest resolution on my
machine. When I try to race the car takes off on its own and
overreacts ***ly to steering input (Thrustmaster GP1 wheel
calibrated in CART PR setup), making it veer left and right. I'm not
exactly a newbie to racing sims and I DID set up the preferences and
settings before running the game. Forget it, it just won't run.
Granted, I may not have the recommended hardware for CART PR, so I'm
not going to dwell on that. (I'll be interested to see how it works on
my soon-to-be-ready K6-200 upgrade, but I'm dubious.)
However, there are some other aspects of this sim that are absolutely
dreadful.
First, why are the mirrors drawn with just a little sliver of them
visible at the edge of the screen? I can see only the inside edge of
each mirror. It looks like about one quarter of the mirror is showing.
And what's with only one front tire at a time being visible? The demo
shows the inside of the right tire when steering left and the inside
of the left tire when steering right. When the car is going straight,
neither tire is visible. Are we supposed to believe that's realism?
I'm hoping these problems are due to the fact that CART PR doesn't
like my current primitive computer system. We were all hoping for an
outrageous new Indy car sim, but I think we've ended up with another
dud.
