F1RS: Issues for improvement

Hi!

After racing GP2, ICR2, Nascar2 we really waited for a sim like F1
Racing
Simulation! Great graphics, fluid frame rate (because of Voodoo
support),
and incredible physics.

While this is true, there are still some issues which we would like to
let you know. The most important issues to us are at the top:

- We don't want to drive as Schumacher or Hill, but under our own names.
Likewise we really missed the possibility to customize the sim, e.g.
  painting cars, helmets, etc.

- Contextsensitive Menus, e.g. inside Garage, the Load menu is already
set
  to 'Settings'.
If you are already on one track, by default only settings for this
track
should be displayed in the Load menu.

- Keyboard support where possible (at least Ok with 'Enter', Cancel with
  'Escape', Focustraversal with 'Tab').
Menu organisation in general and speed between menus is really
annoying,
esp. when optimizing a car setting where you have to switch alot
between
racing and garage menus. There should be a shortcut to the garage
menu.

- Saved hotlaps should include the telemetry data in order to enable the
comparison of laps in different sessions/setups. Right now you can't
check what difference a different setup causes.

- After modifying the sensitivity of the controls the on/off feel using
the pedals was gone, but the engine sound still doesn't fit the rpm's,
it's either high or low. You can't use the engine sound as a valid
  feedback for rpm's.

- In the mode Time trials ('Zeitfahren') all options should be
available.

- In multiplayer mode we really miss the whole session, e.g. training
and
  qualifying.

- Performance is good but with a lot of cars in front, e.g. at the
starting
grid, it is reduced quite a lot. An option to reduce/increase the
number
of cars drawn ahead/behind would lessen this without a big hit in
graphical
  beauty.

- Pit radio messages cause quite annoying stuttering, at least the first
few
  messages.

- Names for Tracks should always be the same, e.g. not Melbourne in one
menu
  and Albert Park in another.

- In Ghost mode you are always put behind the car. If I selected this
once
to be in***pit view, it should be stored as the default.

- All user modified data files are saved in the directory Saved, why are
the
  ghosts saved somewhere else?

- The graphics, to say it again, are breathtaking, just the tires look
really strange, they have an almost rectangular shape.

- As controls I'm using the Thrustmaster GP1 and the CH Pedals. I would
like to use the CH Pedals in car mode, which uses 2 axis for gas and
break. After configuring the combo as 2 "2-axis,2-button" joysticks,
the break pedal was not working.

- Replays, as already admitted on your web page, are totally useless.

While we are already certain that we will drive this sim for a very long
time, we would be VERY happy to see most of these issues addressed.

Greetings

Right. Only works in a championship.

Duh,..... that wasn't an option on GP-2 either.

It is.... or is that in saving?

Not a problem for me, really, but that's IMO.

Right. This one I agree fulhearthed with. The trouble to get all the way
back to the garage is not neccesary. A simple garage icon when in the pits
should work wonders.

Hmmm. I haven't run it that many times yet.

Right, big problem. Shifting you really need to check the RPMs.

What PC are you using? I have absolutely NO pauses on my P-166 with Monster
3D.

No, haven't had that happening.

Haven't even noticed that, but it's a minor point.

Again, not a big problem.

What's the trouble? It'd make a good clean directory. No, everything in one
folder like in GP-2: championships, setups, saved games, joystick-config,
just EVERYTHING.

Right, curved sides would be a lot nices.

Can't comment, use joystick only.

Patch coming.

Well, painting a car will happen as I'm sure someone will be able to
decipher the code and make a likewise program like GP-2 editor in time.

Sound. Well, if it were anything like GP-2, and the prog arises, that should
solve it. If the sound is indeed not really indicating the RPM, we have a
problem and a patch from Ubisoft would be neccesary.

And again, the performance issue is something that baffles me when a person
with a PII-266 Mhz complains about stuttering starts. Maybe DirectX 5 is not
totally certified?

Well, would you angry, if they put features in F1RS that were not
included
in GP2?? 8^) You could do this in ICR2, eeeh, CART and look at all those
beautifull free carsets on the net...

No, the menus are always reset to the default, no matter where you left
them
the last time.

Did you try a start with a full field (21 cars) ahead of you (of course
with
all graphics on except view distance on level 2)??? If you still don't
get a
rather big frame rate hit, you doubled the clock on your CPU... =8)

It's just easier to backup only ONE directory instead of TWO!

Maybe it's just me, but I really hate the expression "duh". Sounds
really insulting. Anyway...

a) We could customise cars in GP2 despite the fact that it wasn't an
option
b) 3D accelerator support wasn't in GP2 either - does that mean we
should leave it out of F1RS?

Things are allowed to progress y'know.

Actually it's more when feeding power in on exiting a corner. I tend
to modulate the throttle when exiting a turn, and in F1RS the throttle
sound is either idling or leaps back up to the full power sound. There
is no gradual progression that lets you know how the car is behaving.
If the engine sound were actually to leap up to full, that should mean
that the rear wheels are spinning crazily and you're already picking
gravel out of your racing suit.

I think it is a problem. Very annoying to have to reselect***pit
view every single time I go to the garage and back. The default should
be whatever the use last selected.

Cheers!
John

I guess you guys haven't discovered the little feature about saving
ALL of your game settings?
