F1RS Frame Rate Improvement Tips??

by Scott R. Lun » Sun, 24 May 1998 04:00:00

Hey guys, I just got F1RS last week and I've been a little less than
pleased with my system.  I was formerly running the English demo, and
that seemed to run smoother for me.
I don't know exactly what my framerates are, but I suspect they are
getting under 20 during some parts and look kind of choppy.
Here's my system: Pentium o/ced to 250 MMX, Asus TX97, 64 MB EDO
RAM, Quantum Fireball 4.3, 24X CD, CL Voodoo 2 12 meg, AWE64 soundcard.
I patched it to the 1.09 version.  Does anyone have any ideas what I can
do to improve my framerate?  It just seems like it should run better for
me.  Most of my other sims and games scream on this system; this is one
of the choppiest ones I have.
It hasn't been too long since I defragged, and like I said pretty
much everything else is running very smooth.
Also, will the Direct Sound patch do anything for me with the AWE64,
or should I leave it alone?  Thanks.

Huh.

Wow. I have a P5-200MMX (80MB ram) with a Voodoo1 card. Framerate
is fantastic. I was going to get a Voodoo2 card but now I'm not so sure.
Try disabling your AWE64, that isn't really a very good card and may
be causing some problems. Anyway forget arguing if the card is good
or not disabling the sound is worth a try IMHO.

The DirectSound patch only seems to work properly with the Maxisound
Game Theatre 64 soundcard (Made by UBIsoft's parent company.
Surprise surprise).

Also how much free space do you have on your HD and what is your
swapfile situation?

>1) Reduce the number of cars.

I have the max number of cars and a P5-200 and great framerate. This
shouldn't be the problem on a P5-255 or whatever.

I have a dynamic swapfile on my C: which has over 1GB free. My
point is a fixed swapfile is not essential.

I blame the AWE64 :-)

I agree.  My "old" system was similar to what he describes--200mmx, M2 8meg,
64mb sdram, 6x TEAC, AWE 32.  F1RS ran fine on that system with the
exception of the noted and notorious "first turn slowdown".  I have always
heard that the AWE 64 is a frame rate guzzler, and this would seem to be
proof.  Scott, it would be interesting if you picked up one of the newer PCI
3D sound cards, plugged it into your system and let us know what happened.
You didn't say whether or not you have a full install, but if you don't, I'm
sure that would also help your framerates.

You might want to go to the Creative site
(http://www.soundblaster.com/wwwnew/tech/ftp/ftp-sb16awe.html) and make sure
you have updated both the card and audio drivers.  The latest card driver is
rev.13 and the "wswg95up" audio driver update is an absolute must.

I myself had a problem with my AWE64 Gold card when I was running I'76 Gold on
it (the program would always crash), but after updating both drivers the card
has been running rock-solid.  Apparently the older audio drivers would hog up
the FPU but this will fix the problem quite nicely.

I wouldnt blame the card but rather the software drivers for it.  Creative
doesnt exactly have the greatest track record when it comes to supporting their
products with driver updates.  Diamond comes in a close second...
