Hi to all!

I downloaded a cars96 zip file that contain the 1996 F1 cars from Trevor
Kellaway's site  http://www.racesimcentral.net/;I
also downloaded his program GP2JAM that is supposed to enable you to
convert the .bmp files to .jam files.

It would seem that I am one of the few unlucky who cannot get the program
to work.

I am hoping that there is another GP2 buff out there who would not mind
sending me the 1996 cars in ....jam format in a zip file so that I may
also enjoy racing the updated cars

Thanks In advance

How does the amount of memory efects GP2,especialy FPS. Is it any faster with
32 Mb, comparing to 16 Mb ?

Could we expect a real patch from Microprose-Holobyte ,which would change a
3D shapes to the new 1997 season look, and also adjust the AI of drivers?
It is pretty boring to see Schumy always around 5 place when I put him in
Ferrari or first but in non-interesting Beneton.

I would be satisfied with only that change ,but, there is couple more which
could be improved to....

Any words about it ?

While memory prices are (reasonably) low, I decided to upgrade my P166 from 16MB to
32MB last week.  I noticed *no* discernable difference in the GP2 frame rate or
occupancy.

And, no, I did not buy extra memory just to try and improve GP2.  I'm neither
surprised or disappointed.

I'm in the same boat.  Do your karma some good and help us both out.
Note.  I have no idea how to manipulate zip files.  Send me a clue.

No, I think the licencing agrrement with the FIA will preclude this.

However, one can expect the famous Trevor Kellaway and the like to
come up with fixes for these issues soon ... it appears the
hi-nose/lo-nose display characteristics (for example) are encoded
(somewhere) in each separate .JAM file or (somewhere) in GP2.EXE ...
once isolated, we can look forward to utilities/patches to deal with
this from the player community.

I am keen to alter the AI driver performances and also to force a
higher level of retirement (including that of my own car from time to
time) so as to reflect the attrition of a F1 race more realistically.

I don't understand why they don't post them in JAM format directly.

1.  JAM's don't compress, BMP's do.
2.  JAM's can't be edited directly, BMP's can, thanks to Trevor
Kellaway's GP2JAM utility to convert them.  Then you can edit
them using any of your favorite bitmap/paint programs and
     convert them back!

Hope this helps.

Because the bmp's zip to around 4k. The jams wont get much smaller
than 40k. Add up all those jams and the 1996 carset would be pretty
big.

I agree more or less with the previous poster: a finished design by a competent
artist isn't supposed to be altered by the person who requests it :-) Such a
non-artistic driver just wants to replace the thing and go on racing....

Anyone who wants to alter the design can do so by first converting the jam to
bmp.

BTW: BMP is not such a terribly compressed format at all. Just compare it to
jpg....

Placing bmp's on whoever's web page instead of jam's saves a lot of
space and that's probably important to them.
Jpg's...sure they can be small but the picture quality suffers.
When I download jpg's that I want to keep I normaly revert them to
gif's as they look much better.

Have you managed to save 24bit images in the gif format ??

JPGs come in different qualities (the level of compression is adjustable). Even
in the lowest-compression-mode the file will be MUCH smaller.

Not that this has anything to do with simracing, of course  :-)

JPEG images converted back to GIFs look much better?!  Than what?

Given the fact that you are just reducing the bpp from 24 to 8, I find that
highly unlikely.  Now if you had an original scan or pic and kept a GIF vs.
JPEG image, that might make sense depending on the JPG compression level.  The
way I see it, once the Fourier Transform is performed on the image data, you
aren't going to get the lost quality back just by converting to a different
format.

Steady on!

Consider another possibility before you jump on his case - maybe he's
running a 256-colour video mode, and his graphics driver is doing a
poor job dithering JPEG 24-bit down to 8-bit GIF.  That might account
for why it looks better for him ...
