Significance of yellow flag in ICR?

by JB22.. » Fri, 28 Oct 1994 18:13:24

Hi all,
I would like to know what the yellow flag in ICR means. Whenever a
driver crashes in a race (with or w/o me being involved in his
crash), the yellow flag kicks on and we are not allowed to
to go faster than ~80 mph and    pass an opponent (otherwise
the car stops until the guy has passed you again) until
the green flag resumes      , after a  "random(?)"
number of laps.
Is this a rule in Indycar competition ?
Thanks for your explanation.

Jacqueline:

In "real" Indy Car racing, a yellow flag comes out with each
accident and the field of cars is required to slow to a pace (I
believe it is around 90-100 mph ... others are welcome to
correct me on that) and cars are not allowed to pass each
other.  The length of the yellow flag in "real" racing is
dependent on how long it takes to clear the track of debris,
oil, etc.  The simulation appears to mimic parts of a yellow
flag fairly well ... although I have heard various horror
stories about passing on yellow flags.  Only problem I
experience is an inability to control a car I've set-up for
speeds either approaching or exceeding 200 mph at 80-90 mph.

Hope that helps ... I am sure others have a more accurate
description, but since there weren't any as of this time
thought I'd at least give you what info I know.

Brian

The yellow flag is for no-overtaking and indicates when the track is
blocked. It goes green when the danger is cleared (ie crashed cars have
been removed).

Must be that Micheal Andretti car.  :-)  Seriously though, when I've
tried to pass under yellow, I get passed right back.

Just like in real life.  Plus your tires may be hot and you might have
some brake fade happening.  At Michigan I crashed myself out under
yellow because of that very thing.

In order to pass under the yellow flag in ICR, you have to go through
the pits.  You can pass a lot of cars like that.

Unless you do it right before the green.  You can fly right by everyone (it
takes it a few moments to "shut off your gas"), and then when the green comes
out you get your gas back.

Also, it seems that you can usually pass under yellow if you take a detour
down pit road.

Later...
Steve
