Have you guys considered support for the product echospeech are making,
that enables a software driven simultaneous voice and data connection?
(ie. no need to splash out on a DSVD modem - which costs about $800 here
down under).

Sounds like a natural progression for the Nascar and Indycar products to
me.

We're loking at all kinds of things.  You're right, voice would be
nice.  Our problem is the amount of bandwidth it might take up.  We
have all the bandwidth in the word available in the scheuler/chat on
Hawaii.  However, we take up every once of 9600bps while in NASCAR.
Once we move beyond the prototype into the real NRL service, we will
be going to TCP/IP which means that we will probably require a 28.8
modem & fill up most of that bandwidth.  Not much left for compressed
voice.  We're looking into it, though.

<Lots of stuff snipped>

So once we get Nascar2 (Christmas) and the real NRL (sometime in '97), we
will be able to use an internet connection, by passing the LD charges?  Or,
is the TCP/IP connection even further off than that?

Hmmm, a friend and I already discussed this.  24 - 36 racing drivers
screaming at each other continuously for a full race.  At least I can
disconnect it, I hope.  I think DSVD would be great for 2 player modem
races, but I think it would be horrible if implemented in Hawaii.  Just a
thought.

When NRL comes out, you will not have to deal with long distance
charges any more.

HOWEVER, that should not be taken to mean that NRL will be available
over the internet.  As a whole, latencies on the internet are too high
& too unpredicatable.

Does this mean I had better get rid of my 14.4 modem and get a 28.8 before
X-mas? I need to start saving my pennies now if I do. Of course even that
is hard , wat with the huge phone bills and all :-)

There are some interesting ways around this problem. For example, during
the race, chat could be limited to the cars nearest you, or mixed according
to proximity (the "cocktail party" effect). The other possibility is a hot
button to transmit just to the car directly in front or behind you ("I'm
passing inside" or "Pass me high"). It would also be nice for the series
director to have a way to broadcast messages to everyone ("Single file
start" or "No passing in the tri-oval").

Racing with DSVD is VERY cool. The other night, we were modem racing ICR2
together and giving each other pointers on the lines at various tracks. And
yelling at the other for getting punted or punting the AI. It adds a whole
new dimension to head-to-head competition.

Right now, the problem is that on Papyrus' end, they need access to the
audio streams from the DSVD modem and a way to mix them in real-time
without loading down the server. There aren't any off-the-shelf solutions
at this point.
