news came.<
Wow! I had forgotten, but now I recall that I cried like a baby when I heard
the news. Since we were both mechanical engineers and sports car racers
(cough, cough...albeit at opposite ends of the spectrum...I can't find F1 of
Can-Am anywhere on my resum), I had particular affection for him. A purely
class act and a huge loss! We may not see the likes of him again in out
lifetimes.

Hey Mark, I am a little confused by your site. I get the impression
that the SCCA Can-Am sim is online-only. If so, that is a tragedy, IMO.
Tell me I'm wrong and I'll slink away, and sit in the corner
with a big grin on my face...

------------------
Motorsims Announces Development of SCCA Can-Am PC Racing Simulation
Online and CD ROM Simulation Based On Legendary Road-Racing Event
Las Colinas, TX (June 12, 1999) - Motorsport Simulations (Motorsims),
creators of racing simulations and the Motorsims Racing Network online
community (http://www.racesimcentral.net/), today announced the development of
SCCA Can-Am, an online and stand-alone retail boxed PC CD-ROM racing
simulation.
Launching in early 2000, this title is the first to be developed under
Motorsims' long-term partnership with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).
Following on the heels of Motorsims' soon-to-be-launched AMA Superbike
title, SCCA Can-Am will keep Motorsims in pole position by delivering
another exciting, competitive racing experience based on an
exclusively-licensed racing property.
"Can-Am is a true fan's racing format and we're glad to be part of the
resurgence of interest in Can-Am racing," said Bob McCarthy, Motorsims'
chairman and founder. "We are e***d to offer a competitive online product
to racing enthusiasts who have been waiting for this kind of reality-based
experience."
"The Sports Car Club of America recognizes that Motorsims has the same
enthusiasm for racing that all SCCA members share. We look forward to them
bringing Can-Am prototype racing to computer gamers and the Internet," said
Dennis Dean, vice president of the SCCA.
SCCA Can-Am is set to offer racing enthusiasts an exact simulation of the
road-racing endurance challenges that made the sport one of the most popular
racing series of the early 70's (revived in
1998 -- Can-Am is now in its 'modern era'). The game will utilize Motorsims'
proprietary game-engine technology designed as an online *** network and
dedicated to the specific demands of racing simulations. In Can-Am, famous
chassis and engine manufacturers combine to create open-cockpit, closed
wheel cars. In addition, Motorsims will include SCCA's popular SpecRacer
Ford series racing as a 'training mode.'
"Can-Am racing is well suited to racing simulation because it is all about
understanding things like detailed suspension-tuning and tire dynamics,"
said Motorsims Director of Design and Planning, Mark Miller. "We're also
researching night driving as well as the effects weather on tracks, which
are important aspects of endurance racing."
About motorsport simulations
Headquartered in Las Colinas, TX, Motorsport Simulations was founded by Bob
McCarthy. The company offers motorsport enthusiasts the opportunity to
experience authentic competitive motorsport racing through first-class
computer simulations. Motorsport Simulations has alliances with a number of
leading personalities in the racing world. These alliances include Pat
Patterson, publisher of the authoritative facts-and-figures guidebook Pat
Patterson's Guide To Racing; Dave Despain, a noted racing analyst and
Speedvision broadcaster; Chet Burks, Executive Producer of Chet Burks
productions, which produces popular motorsport racing events for a number of
media outlets; David Sadowski, a current racing analyst and former AMA
champion; and Lance Holst, former AMA race team manager and current
Roadracing Editor at Motorcycle Performance magazine and riding instructor
at the STAR Motorcycle School.
More information on Motorsport Simulations can be found on their Web site at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/.
Motorsims games will all have online capability built in. They will all be
viable standalone, boxed games as well. You can't put an online-only game on
the shelves and expect it to sell. Starsiege Tribes is one of the few
exceptions to that rule.
Right now the company is almost completely consumed with getting Superbike
out the door. Once that's done (and everyone gets back from much-needed
vacations), we'll update the web site and things will start to get somewhat
less muddy.
You may begin.
But also don't assume that our vision of online racing is as confined as
what you've become used to.

The hard question I have is about licensing. Will you be including
"obvious renames" for the cars that Motorsims can't license? Like
what Papy did with "Coventry" and "Murasama" for example. I'm sure
a great many of us here would want to see all of the famous cars of
Can-Am's glory years such as McLaren, Porsche, Lola, Shadow, etc... when
the retro pack comes out. It would be a shame not to include them if the
licensing doesn't work out. I know this is kind of a touchy subject so
whatever you can reveal would be much appreciated.

First, a clarification ... the first Can-Am game will be the current era
cars. Next season's cars, most likely (meaning we're watching BMW very
closely). Spec Racer Ford will also be included as a way to learn the tracks
and for online depth.
[
[The current plan is to follow this game immediately with a "retro-pak" to
[the glory days of '67-'73. We should even be able to get some of the old
[tracks - Riverside, etc.
[
The car in our screenshots was sort of a concept car - taking bits from
various different designs. Since we'll target V3's (w/V2 support) chances
are very good to allow custom paint jobs. We should have the network
infrastructure in place to handle sharing these too.
Physics will surpass GPL. Really. Wait for the press releases and all will
become clear.
We'll also have night and rain and fog and all that miserable crap. Be
careful what you wish for.

So I guess the answer is yes. Check the part prephased by the '['s.
I believe he said something to this effect on High Gear's message forums
about wanting to get all the licensing for the sim.
