1970's CAN-AM SIM ANNOUNCED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Mark S. Mille » Thu, 01 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Well, I can tell you that we'll have all the stuff we're already rolling
into Superbike. This includes tire temp (which changes during a turn, not
just during a lap), tire pressure change as a result of temp, tire wear.
Each wheel and it's suspension back to the chasis is modeled independantly.

Full aerodynamics (incl. the effects of losing ground effects when you start
losing it - so you'll really lose it, plus control over splitters, downforce
fore and aft, etc.). Probably flat-spotting.

"Rain" is a much more complex thing than just drawing it - because the
course wets and dries differently across the width of the track over time.
Doing rain right is going to be ... hard. But if you watched the F1 race in
France last weekend, you can see how important it is to get it right -
because it's a totally different race.

If I commit Matt to more than this, this early, he'll likely kill me. So I
best stop here.

Ah yes, the Hertz rent-a-cars.  Rent them on the weekend to take to the local
track and race them.

I have a Mustang book that has a section of the GT-350H's.
They used to come back to Hertz with holes in the rear floor.
Guys would rent them for the weekend, and put a roll bar in them to
race. ;-)

Yep, I sure do. Also Peter Revson and Dennis Hulme were
two of my faves!

Dennis Hulme may have been the most precise driver I have
ever personally witnessed, with the possible exception of
Ayrton Senna.

You could stand at the end of the esses at Road Atalanta
and watch a -tiny- 1" grease spot on the track in mid-corner,
and Denny's right front tire would touch the spot -exactly-
the same in each race lap, or hot lap. A friend of mine and I
would just watch in awe, lap after lap as he did this. He was
quick too!

I noticed the same preciseness in Senna, the two times
I saw him.

Incredible..

It's based on the 1970 Can-Am season. Unlimited everything. There were
basically no rules other than it had to have 4 tires.

I knew it was too good to be true. 50/50 chance we will never see the
true Can-Am cars of the 1970s.

Don't you know it. I was lucky enought to see Mark at Riverside in the
Sunoco 917/30K, the last "real" Can-Am race. He simply waxed the field. The
McLarens put up a fight but could barely keep up with the 917/10 Porsches
from the year before. Andretti was driving this monster of a McLaren with a
HUGE aluminium V8 with twin turbos. He qualified well but it blew up early
in the desert heat. Mark was on another planet. He was the same in the IROC
race also. It was the first year of the series and they were running the
Porsche Carrera "Easter Eggs". Donohue had set up the cars and again, no one
could touch him.

I started working as a turn marshall soon after, and Mark was a big hero of
ours, off racing in F1 as he was. We cried when the news came.

Funny, I've only felt that way about one other person, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Clark was the same.  So was Fangio.
There is a sequence of photographs of Fangio in the **streamlined** Mercedes
GP car (i.e, enclosed wheels) where he comes within millimetres of a
concrete curb (about 150mm high) lap after lap after lap.  You or I would
have stuffed the front suspension at the second try!

Bruce.

Actually, I owned one of the GT-350 H's. There was a Ford
dealership near me that had 10 of them. Most were beat pretty
well,  but I bagged a pretty clean one.

Had it for 2 months. The insurance inspector took me to the
cleaners.  Fiberglass hood & pins, extra $.  Tach, extra $.

Etc, etc.

Yikes.  Today, one would probably have to hire a battery of
attorneys just to drive the thing.

Citizen: "That car is too loud. I'm stressed & I'm going to file
a lawsuit."

The representative of the company said, here in this newsgroup, that
it was based on current cars with a 70's add-on planned.
