(long) GPL: new *fast* PC, a few minor problems

by Rob Adam » Sat, 16 Jun 2001 06:46:59

I recently picked up my shiny new PC (specs below) and GPL runs great on it.
As usual with new hardware though, I'm experiencing a few minor irritations.
I'm hoping some of you hardware gurus have some suggestions:

mainboard: ASUS A7M266, BIOS revision 1003 (flashed from 1002 last night)
CPU: AMD Athlon 1.333 GHz
RAM: 256 MB Crucial DDR (PC1600)
Vid: 64MB Hercules Prophet Ultra II
Sound: Diamond Monster MX-300
HD: Maxtor 40.0GB 7200RPM UDMA 100

sound card driver: latest reference Vortex 2 driver ver 2041 plus A3D
drivers 2.12
vid card driver: nVidia driver 12.41

GPL 1.2 with the newest D3D patch and disco fix. No other patches (carsound,
etc.). I am using a Lotus sound from Alison's site, and an updated dash, but
no other graphics updates

Here are the problems:
1. Sound pops and crackles significantly in GPL. I got a bit of this with my
previous PC (PII 333, Voodoo 3) but not enough to annoy.

-->I have visited the GeForce FAQ site and followed most of their
suggestions, nothing helped. (The suggestions I didn't follow dealt with
BIOS changes that didn't relate to my BIOS or I couldn't find them if they
did).

2. Menu flickers in GPL when coming off the track.

-->I have seen this mentioned in other posts and the solution was always
"use older drivers or live with it". I can live with it unless there is an
easy solution. It happens maybe 40% of the time, and hitting Esc twice makes
it go away (GPL displays the "leave session" dialog box which clears up the
display).

3. (For the real hw gurus): the mainboard comes with an integrated "CMedia"
sound chip, which I have turned off in the BIOS settings. However, Win98
keeps detecting a "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" and can't find drivers. If I
delete it from Device Manager it just comes back. I'd like to make it go
away cuz it bugs me.

-->I flashed the BIOS (on the vendor's suggestion) in an attempt to get my
BIOS setup screen to resemble the one in the BIOS manual, but it still
doesn't. I'm thinking this is a bad thing, but the PC seems to be working
fine.

4. I applied the "coolbits" Reg patch in an effort to get the overclocking
and vsync tabs in the nVidia control panel but it didn't work for the 12.41
drivers. I don't want to overclock (yet) but I'd like to see what else I can
fiddle with. Anybody been able to get this to work with these drivers?

Thanks in advance

Perhaps easier to press the "save replay" icon and then cancel the save...
that cures it on the rare occasions it happens with V3 and Glide Wrapper.

On my new pc (KT133A chipset), there are two places in the BIOS where
you have to diasable the onboard sound: Advanced Chipset Features ->
OnChip Sound and Integrated Peripherials -> Onboard Legacy Audio.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Jens. My BIOS manual shows 2 places (similar wording to what you
describe) but my BIOS doesn't match the manual - there is only one setting.
I'm assuming the manual is out of date. The setting that's missing is
"Onboard Legacy Audio" which sounds like what I need :(

The menu flickering problems are an unavoidable part of using D3D in GPL. No
solution, although some say certain video card drivers are better than
others here (I'm unconvinced, having tried several).

The 12.41 drivers don't allow overclocking, it's disabled in this version as
these are the MS-approved "offical" detonators. The 12.40 and 12.60 drivers
let you overclock but may not be as stable (on account of them not being
"officially approved") - if you really want to clock your card with the
12.41's then I believe you can copy just one of the 12.40 files into your
12.41 folder but I'm afraid I don't know which one, sorry. Alternatively use
the 12.40's or if you don't need too much DX8 stuff then I find the 10.80
drivers are a few % faster......

Look for a jumper called Audio_EN near the CMedia audio chip.

I wondered how long it would take until somebody suggested a non-software
method! I'm a-scared!

But yeah, that's probably the best way.

Thanks Dale.

p.s. My pc's faster than yours, nyeah nyeah!

I'm using 12.41 drivers and the graphics problems went away. Solid.

I'm using D3D with a Riva TNT Model 64, and have never experienced any menu
flickering.

So at least that card works!

(I'm using it on Windows 2000, btw).

I'd agree, definitely change the jumper. My sister's pc with onboard
sound would still work even if it was disabled in the bios (but
enabled with the jumper), and windows would recognise and install
software for it.

Piece of pie to change the jumper, just check the manual for which way
and do it with the power off :)

Don't think 2041 are quite the latest Vortex drivers.
Try http://www.vortexofsound.com/drivers/drv_v29x.htm for 2048?

Yup, you're right. I wrote the original post from work, guessing at version
numbers - I do have 2048.

Thanks to all who helped - I flipped the jumper to turn off the onboard
chip, and:

1. The device no longer appears in Device Manager (Yay)
2. The crackles in GPL are gone (YAY)
3. I have a couple of free IRQ's to play with (yay)

PC's are such fun...

Usually there is a jumper on the systemboard that must be adjusted as well.

Visit http://www.wildandyc.co.uk/Miscellaneous/coolbits/nocoolbitshey.shtml.
I ran across it today; it says how to reenable Coolbits with the 12.41
drivers.

In the spirit of never letting a thread die: I was running first at Road
Atlanta last night (GPL) when my fan started to make a clicking noise. It
stopped making the noise after a couple of seconds then Crack! Flash! Dead
power supply :(

Fortunately the vendor lives near me and was available at 8:30 PM and I had
a new power supply by 9.
