Did you try washing the CD? Use Windex or something similar and don't wash
in a circular motion, wash across. It's  worked for me on many CDs.
Aside from that, that's a crappy attitude for customer service. It wouldn't
have hurt them to have you send the CD to them and send you a new one.

I consider this a legitimate request for a crack for GPL.

Sierra have washed their hands of my problem.....

Added a bigger disc and a DVD in place of CD-Rom. Come to re-install GPL and
it refuses to recognise the CD !!

Sierra's answer ? ............. put the CD drive back in or return the CD to
my supplier !!
The CD has gone to another home and I don't have receipt for GPL, not after
this length of time.

Talk about shitty customer service :-(

So, how can I get by the installation check on the CD ?
I've searched warez sites and can't find anything that works - gplpatch
reports it cannot find setup.ins ( in GERMAN ! )

Please help.
I am missing GPL :-( :-( :-(

it does sound like you have a problem.  I don't see it as any fault
of Sierra though.  CD-RW's were just a gleam in power-spenders eyes, let
alone DVD when GPL was produced.   You've added hardware that makes GPL
unplayable...unfortunate indeed but your own doing.
My only suggestion would be to turn off the hard drive(did I read that
right?  You added a 2nd drive AND a DVD player?  If so, temporaily shut
down your new HD and try and set the DVD to use the OLD CD-rom drive
letter.  Good luck.

Copy the entire contents of the GLP disc to your HD and remove the write
protection on the files and you're set to go, just add a shortcut to the
GPL.EXE to your desktop or something, I have the same problem and have
had it for ages, way before adding a DVD drive or anything

If this is on a fresh installation of Windows as well, you need to copy
2 files to your Windows\System directory, I can't remember which files
it was, but I'm sure tech support at Papy can help you out on that one,
but if you've had N3 or GPL installed on this machine previously, no
need for that

GPL crack

Thanks to many who have sent me pointers and cracks.

However, none seem to address the problem ( which I admit I never explained
very well )

I cannot INSTALL GPL.
Sierra's protection scheme to ensure the disc is a master obvioulsy doesn't
work on all new drives.
WHat I need is another way to install it or a crack to the isntall process.

I have tried copying the files, installing from another machine over the
network.
Can anyone help with the INSTALL check PLEASE ??????

Peter

PS: To Dave Henrie, who wrote .....

Sorry, Dave, I consider that if a company does something non-conformant
bad sectors, hidden tracks, CRC errors etc ) then they hold the
responsibility for it not working at any time in the future. If this CD were
"OK" then it would read - all the others do ! It is Sierra's choice in
protection which is the cause of the problem. They should provide the fixes.

You don't need to install GPL, or any other Papy sim for that matter as
it don't write to your registry (nothing important anyway), all you need
to do is copy all the files from the CD to your HD to the directory of
your choice and remove the write protection on all the files (well, you
don't actually need to do it on all the files, but I never bothered to
find out exactly which ones where needed) and run the game by using the
GPL.EXE file, if you don't want to open your explorer and go to your GPL
directory each time you want to start GPL, just make a short-cut to it
on your desktop

If you have had GPL installed on this PC before and haven't reformatted,
this is all you need to do, if you have formatted you HD and reinstalled
Windows, there's 2 files that need to be copied to your Windows\System
directory, but I don't remember which ones, but I'm sure someone at Papy
can help you with this as I remember Eric Busch commenting on this in
the N3.discussion NG at some point

% Thanks to many who have sent me pointers and cracks.

Sounds as if you are a victim of the copy protection scheme used on this
CD....  A few folks seem to have problems with their CD-ROM drives and
this scheme....

Here is a possible solution from an old post to r.a.s.:

I traced it to Win98 using DMA access to my CD, which in
the setup of GPL (and in nothing else) caused exactly the same
behaviour. Possibly the hard drive swaps have caused Win98 to
re-allocate your CD driver and re-initialise it to the default
setup?

Under "CP: System: CD Drive" try toggling DMA access and
rebooting before installing. The GPL installer seems be be picky
about working with DMA access on my drive.

Every other app has had no problem with the drive in this
mode for the last 6-9 months ...

--------- but that didn't work for Pete and he sent this reply ----

Hi Craig

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately it didn't work. But it did
start me thinking and I eventually found the answer. I have recently
added a scsi cd writer and to get windows to recognise it I had to
disable IRQ steering in control panel/system/device manager/system
devices. Enabling it to load GPL then turning it back off afterwards
did the trick....

Thanks for starting off the train of thought...

Cheers
Pete

-------- Here's another possibility (again from an old post) ----

Do you by any chance have more than 1 CD ROM in your machine? If so that
could be the problem.

When my old 6x gave up the ghost, I bought an HP CDRW to replace it
(6x2x2 which was good at the time!) Then along came GPL, and the CDRW
wouldn't read it. Don't know why, but to this day if I put the GPL CD in
that drive, windows Blue-Screens. So I bought a Panasonic 32x CD-ROM as
a reader, keeping the HP as a writer. This new drive reads the CD fine,
but gives me the unofficial CD message (which is ***y annoying when
you've paid for a game!) when I try to install. (But finds the CD
perfectly OK to play the game!).

I finally tracked it down to the way my drives are set up. For reliable
CD writing the CD Writer should be the master on one of your IDE
channels, and the reader the slave. The GPL install seems to ignore the
drive letter of the CD-ROM it was installed from and just check the
master CD-ROM.

The simplest solution I have found for this is to: (1) Switch off my PC.
(2) Unplug the CD-writer IDE ribbon from the back. (3) Reboot PC. It
then thinks it only has the one CD. (4) Install GPL (it only has one
CD-ROM to look at, so it works) (5) Switch PC off again. (6) Re-insert
IDE ribbon. (7) Reboot. Windows seems to manage this without asking for
any drivers, so apart from the obvious pain in the arse of fiddling
around with your case and cables etc, it's relatively hassle free.

The strange thing is that one of my housemates also has a CD-Writer and
CD-ROM (different models, but set up the same way), and he doesn't have
the problem, even when installing from the Slave drive. All a bit odd
really.

Anyway, if you've got more than 1 CD, give it a whirl.

I don't know why this happens either, but I get "invalid CD" or
something when I try to install GPL the regular way on my PC, but
Michael Carver's repost of a possible solution gave me something to try

Sierra and a lot of other publisher only trusts americans, to not copy
their games.

GPL here in Europe (Denmark) needs a CD to run.

Thanks but it didn't help.

PS: Also tried changing the UDF setting ( it made a difference for MPEG card
