Sorry guys, its not a software crack....

When I start GPL I get this enormous 'crack'  from my monitor
when GPL starts with the (black) opening screen!  This is a
heavy mechanical/electrical crack.... as though the monitor is
struggling with the screen display/resolution, sometimes it
will not display this opening screen, stays all black then
dives into the menu screens!  Is there something 'odd' about
this opening GPL screen, I don't have this problem with any
other program.  I use a P200mmx, 64mb. Mystyque 2D coupled to
a Monster 3DFX-II, running at 600x800 (75hz), I get about
28/30 fps in race mode.... the monitor is a Nokia 21" which
will run to very hi-res! (1600x1200)..... anyone else have
this problem or know of a cure for it?  I am worried that I am
going to wreck my monitor with this 'explosive' GPL start up!

I have a CTX monitor, which has various refresh rates for me to choose from
at certain resolutions, my monitor make quite a load 'crack' noise when it
changes resolution! Frightened me at first!

Ive had the same problem with a Nec multisync 3d, from 1990 to 1998 when I
replaced it for a bigger one.
It still works after 8 years of cracking and beeping sound when changing
resolution.

I believe what you're hearing is a relay or relays switching the video
mode of your monitor.  Mine does the same thing, always has, and it
happens in games other than GPL as well.  I'll bet that if you back your
resolution down to 640x480 the crack will no longer occur.  I've worked
with many monitors that do this, it's nothing to worry about.

Hi Dave,

I have a cheap-o Daytek 17" monitor (its about 5 years old now so it was
expensive at the time :-)  After blowing 2 power supplies, I decided to
reduce my refresh rates to 60Hz.  Now I don't get the "buzzing" when
changing resolutions.  The "crack" sounds like my "buzz", if you can use
the same refresh rate try it.

On the other hand, the "crack" shouldn't hurt your monitor.  Sounds like
the expensive power supplies "crack" and the cheap ones "buzz".
